DOGS RESCUED FROM TREE IN PARK

Elyria – Two dogs got themselves into a precarious position high up in a tree Monday afternoon and needed help getting back on the ground.

Elyria Firefighters were called to Cascade Park just before 2 p.m. Monday afternoon after people in the park spotted the two dogs trapped in the tree. Firefighters found the two dogs, one about 7 years old and the other about 4 years old perched about 18 feet up in a hollow of a tree that had tumbled over years ago.

The tree was too unstable for Firefighters to climb up or to use any kind of ropes so the idea was to get them to come back down on their own.

Pressurized water cans were used to push the dogs towards the hole in the tree that would lead them back down to freedom. The younger of the two dogs wasn’t a fan of being sprayed and popped through the hole and simply walked down the tree and disappeared into the woods. The older seemed to enjoy the hosing down and stayed put.

The Lorain County Dog Warden brought dog food to the tree and was tossing pieces up to the frightened pup. With the accuracy of Colt McCoy he was able to get several pieces into the hollow for the dog.

Lorain County Emergency Management Director Tom Kelley arrived on scene and brought in an expert from Richards Tree Service and an animal rescue team from C.A.R.E. (County Animal Rescue and Evacuation).

Many ideas were being thrown at Captain Robert Dempsey of the Elyria Fire Department, the man in charge of the operation, as to the best way to get the dog down. Many were tossed out due to the risk factors as they were in a precarious area with a slick ground covered with leaves and on a hill.

Finally Dempsey decided to go with using a ladder wrapped in a tarp. Firefighters hoisted the ladder up to the limb and the Dog Warden connected a “snoop” (a type of noose) around the dog’s neck and guided him to and down the ladder. Dempsey said later, “it wasn’t the prettiest rescue but she’s down and safe.”

A small crowd of park walkers and neighbors from Glendale Street that had assembled to watch the rescue applauded the efforts of all the rescuers as the down was brought up the hill.

The dog was taken away by volunteers from the C.A.R.E. group.

WEATHER ALERT: HIGH WINDS

The National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a HIGH WIND WARNING for North Central Ohio from 10 a.m. Tuesday until 8 p.m. Tuesday night.

The winds across northwest and north central Ohio will increase to 25 to 35 MPH by late morning ahead of an approaching Cold Front. Winds are expected to increase to 30 to 40 MPH by early afternoon with GUSTS to near 60 MPH possible.

There is a very good chance that SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS will also develop during the afternoon hours. The Severe Thunderstorms could produce wind gusts as high as 70 MPH.

CRASH SENDS ONE TO METRO

Carlisle Township – One Elyria man flown to Cleveland after a single car crash on East River Road near Fuller early Monday morning.

Trooper Dave Dylag of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said that 36 year old Marlon Charley of Elyria was driving southbound on East River Road when he lost control of his car on the curve near the church. Charley then over-corrected and went off the left side of the roadway where he struck a utility pole.

As the car left the roadway it was still traveling south but the front of the car was pointing northeast. The rear passenger side of the car took most of the impact. The car spun and ended up in a front yard on East River.

Neighbors say when they first approached the vehicle neither of the two occupants were able to speak but as Troopers and Paramedics arrived they were both responsive and talking.

Carlisle Township Firefighters and LifeCare Paramedics treated both the driver and passenger at the scene and then transported them to Elyria Memorial Hospital. A helicopter was dispatched to EMH for Charley due to a head injury.

Dylag said that the investigation into the crash is ongoing and that charges are pending.

Elyria – A 12 year old Elyria girl was taken to the hospital after she collided with a car while riding her bike on Gulf Road Sunday night.

Witnesses say the girl was riding her bike north on Gulf Road when she attempted to cross at Ohio Street. The girl was ring at a high rate of speed witnesses told Police when she entered the intersection striking the 2003 Buick that was stopped at a traffic light on Ohio Street.

The girl and bike went over the top of the car before coming to rest on the roadway.

LifeCare Paramedics treated the girl at the scene and then transported to Elyria Memorial Hospital for further treatment and evaluation.

FIRE DESTROYS TWO APARTMENTS

TEN FAMILIES WITHOUT A HOME

Elyria – One Firefighter was taken to the hospital and ten families are out of their homes tonight after a fire swept through two apartments on Barres Lane Saturday afternoon.

Chief Ron Brlas of the Elyria Fire Department said the blaze that began just after 2 p.m. Saturday caused approximately $125.000 in damages to the structure and contents. “The fire began in apartment number 6 on the second floor in a bedroom. The fire then worked its way up the walls and into the apartment above before coming out of the roof.”

Brlas said the fire apartment was occupied by Michelle Alexander and her 9 year old son. Alexander was inside of the apartment sleeping butt told Brlas her son was outside playing. Alexander woke up to the smell of smoke and began a search for the fire. When she looked in a bedroom she found the bed on fire.

Alexander ran from the building and found her landlord outside doing routine maintenance.

Elyria Fire received the call at 2:03 p.m. and according to Brlas Tower 8 was on scene at 2:10. “There was a slight delay in getting water on the fire because Engine 1 was on a medical call in Colonial Oaks down in the south end of town. When Engine 3 arrived they started laying lines and were the first to go inside to make an attack on the fire.”

The Engine 3 crew entered the second floor attacking the blaze and then a crew from Engine 1 arrived and entered the first floor. Brlas said that in short time the fire broke through the third floor walls on the Barres Lane side of the structure and he deemed it no longer safe for his crews to be inside. An evacuation alarm was sounded by Lorain County 9-1-1 over the radios and air horns were sounded from an Engine at the scene – signaling to all Firefighters inside to get out of the structure.

Once outside a deck gun was used to help extinguish the blaze. After a few minutes a bulk of the fire was knocked down and Firefighters returned to the inside.

One of the occupants told Brlas that her bird was still inside of her apartment on the lower level. A Firefighter was able to enter the apartment and retrieve the bird in its cage and return it to the owner. Two cats were reported to be inside of the structure but Brlas said the cats were not found and is unsure if they had escaped and ran away or not.

Elyria Firefighter Lieutenant Wayne Eppley was treated at the scene after being overcome with smoke. He was transported to Elyria Memorial Hospital and later released.

Of the 12 apartments in the building all but 2 were occupied. Brlas said that the Lorain County Chapter of the American Red Cross is taking care of the 10 families that will be without a home for awhile. “Two of the apartments received major fire damage while the remaining 10 suffered severe smoke and water damage.”

CRASH SENDS LORAIN MAN TO METRO

Lorain – A two car crash Friday night on Broadway near 37th Street sent one man to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland in serious condition.

The crash occurred after two SUV’s collided on Broadway near West 37th Street. Police say a Saturn VUE was traveling northbound on Broadway and a Ford Explorer was traveling southbound collided.

Lorain Firefighters had to extricate the driver of the Saturn VUE before LifeCare Paramedics were able to transport him to Community Health Partners ER. Because of his poor condition at the scene Paramedics requested a helicopter to meet them at the emergency room.

The driver of the Explorer 60 year old Eddie Love of Lorain was treated at the scene by Paramedics but he refused transport to the hospital.

The Lorain Police Department is investigating the crash.

CRASH VICTIM REMAINS IN CCU

MIDDLE AVE CRASH UPDATE:
Mini Kiefer, the wife of “Tiny”, the driver of the motorcycle that was involved in the crash Friday afternoon at Middle Ave and 9th Street, said her husband remains in a critical care unit at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. Tiny’s injuries included broken legs, hips and several cracked ribs.

Kiefer said that her son Justin, one of the two pedestrians hit during the crash has a broken leg and expects a full recovery. The third victim was Justin’s girlfriend and she suffered only minor injuries.

Kiefer asks for prayers for all involved in the crash.

ROLL OVER CRASH ON WASHINGTON

Elyria – If you’re a “glass half full” kind of person I suppose you could say at least Nancy Bennett had a couple weeks to enjoy her brand new 2010 White Honda Accord before it was crashed into early Friday morning.

Police say that 31 year old Angela Straka of Elyria was traveling south on Washington Ave just after 2 a.m. Friday morning when she “failed to maintain reasonable control” and struck Bennett’s car that was parked on the street in front of 234 Washington Ave. The impact pushed Bennett’s car ahead 30 feet and caused Straka’s Focus to roll over onto its side.

Elyria Police patrolling in the area heard the collision and responded to the scene immediately. Officers were able to assist Straka in getting out of the car.

LifeCare Paramedics spoke with Straka but she refused any treatment or transport.

Straka was charged with Failure to Maintain Reasonable Control. Police believe that alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.

TWO CRITICAL AFTER CRASH

DEVELOPING
Elyria - Two people are critical and one in serious condition after a car and motorcycle collided on Middle Ave and 9th Street this afternoon.

Michael Thomas said he was sitting on 9th Street at Middle when he saw the car and motorcycle coming towards him. "The bike was following the car and as they got closer the bike started to go around the car - trying to pass on the passenger side of the car."

Thomas said the car was in the right lane closest to the curb when the bike tried to pass. "As the bike tried to pass he popped it - sped up- then the car tried to turn right onto 9th street and they collided."

The bike went off the road and onto the sidewalk in front of Liberty Gas. The bike struck two pedestrians and Lorain County Transit bus bench before coming to rest almost a block from the collision.

Witnesses say that the bike caught fire but that was put out before Police arrived.

LifeCare Paramedics treated the driver of the bike and the two pedestrians at the scene then transported all 3 to Elyria Memorial. Two left the scene critical and one serious. At least one was flown from Elyria to Metro.

Police still have the northbound lanes of Middle Ave blocked between 9th and 8th while they investigate the crash.

ROLL OVER CRASH ON 57

TMC NEWS PHOTOS / BRIAN WOODS Elyria – One person was injured after a driver ran a red light at Route 57 and Taylor Street late Thursday night causing a crash.

Witnesses say that 45 year old Jeff Lustek of Elyria was traveling recklessly on Route 57 in a 1998 Dodge Caravan prior to the crash. Lustek then approached the intersection of 57 and Taylor southbound and ran a red light. Lustek then collided with 17 year old Richard Jones as he was making a left turn onto 57 from Taylor Street. Lustek struck the rear portion of Jones’ Explorer causing it to spin and roll over onto its side.

Lustek’s van continued south and struck a light pole bringing it to the ground.

Lustek was treated on scene by LifeCare Paramedics and then transported to Elyria Memorial Hospital with non life threatening injuries. Lustek’s 16 year old passenger was taken to EMH later by family.

Jones was also taken by his parents to EMH to be evaluated.

Police say that Lustek refused a blood test at EMH and has been charged with running the red light.

SUV BURSTS INTO FLAMES

Elyria – A Ford Expedition burst into flames Sunday night on Floral Court off Lake Ave in Elyria.

Elyria Firefighters were called to 119 Floral Court Sunday evening after neighbors spotted a neighbor’s SUV on fire. Fire was shooting out of the engine compartment and smoke filled the neighborhood as Firefighters arrived on scene to extinguish the blaze.

Firefighters were able to put the fire out in a short amount of time and then secured the burnt out SUV for Elyria Towing to cart away.

Police spoke with the vehicle owner and learned that she had been out driving earlier in the day and stated it had been over heating but did not expect it to catch fire.

There were no injuries reported.

DRIVER STRIKES DEER – ROLLS CAR

Elyria – An Elyria woman, 20 year old Kristy Davis, traveling on I-90 early Monday morning was injured after striking a deer and then rolling her car in the median.

Davis told Police that she was traveling eastbound on I-90 near the Black River Bridge when a deer ran out into the roadway striking the right front corner of her car. Davis then went off the left side of the road into the median where her 2007 Grand Am struck a dirt embankment causing it to roll over and throwing Davis from the car.

A Sheffield Village Police Officer was first on scene and assisted Davis until others arrived.

Elyria Township Firefighters were dispatched to the crash after 9-1-1 was given the wrong location by a caller. After Elyria Township couldn’t find it where they were first told they checked more east and found LifeCare Paramedics treating Davis so they assisted until she was transported.

LifeCare Paramedics treated and transported Davis to Elyria Memorial Hospital Emergency Room where they had requested Metro LifeFlight.

MAN CRASHES ON BRIAR LAKE

Elyria – An Elyria man had to be flown to Metro Sunday after he crashed his motorcycle near the dead end of Briar Lake off North Abbe Road.

Police say that 39 year old Ceasare Hollis of Elyria lost control of his 1998 Honda just before 5 p.m. Sunday causing him to go off the road where he was ejected from the bike as it rolled over.

LifeCare Paramedics treated and transported Hollis to Elyria Memorial Hospital where he was later flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland with head, neck and arm injuries. Hollis was also complaining of chest pains at the scene according to witnesses.

Hollis has been charged with Reasonable Control and Riding a Motorcycle without a License. Police also believe that alcohol was a factor in the crash and additional charges are possible.

WOMAN ROLLS CAR NEAR MALL

Elyria – A North Ridgeville woman rolled her car while turning onto Midway Blvd near the old / new McDonalds.

Police say that 20 year old Katie Sayre of North Ridgeville was traveling south on West River Road near the Midway Mall when she attempted to make a left turn onto Midway Blvd. Sayre lost control of the car during the turn and crashed – rolling the car onto its side.

Sayre was able to get out of the car on her own but was cited by Police with Reasonable Control with a possibility of additional charges.

TWO SERIOUS AFTER ABBE RD CRASH

Sheffield Village – Two people riding a motorcycle were seriously injured Saturday night after colliding with a car on North Abbe Road near Cobblestone.

Captain B.J. Huge of the Sheffield Village Fire Department said that initial reports indicate that the car turned into the path of the motorcycle sending the two riders off their Harley. “Our Firefighters were on scene quickly and recognized the seriousness of the injuries to both of the riders. They treated both and transported the driver of the bike first to Elyria Memorial Hospital.”

Police Officers who were first on scene had their Dispatch put LifeFlight on standby according to Huge, so they were at EMH about 5 minutes after the ambulance arrived with the victim.

The female passenger was transported by Avon Firefighters to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.

The Sheffield Village Police Department is investigating the crash.

DEPUTY SPOTS STOLEN CHARGER

Story & Photos by BRIAN WOODSElyria – Just hours after a Dodge Charger was stolen off a car lot on Cleveland Street in Elyria an alert Sheriff’s Deputy spotted it on Route 113 near Bechtel Road.

Elyria Police were dispatched to Motorcars of Elyria after the owner reported that a man drove off his lot with a 2007 red Dodge Charger Hemi RT. David, co-owner of Motorcars told Police that a black male entered his showroom asking about the Charger. David, who was with another customer at the time, told the man he would have to wait a few minutes. After the man interrupted several more times, David gave him the keys to go check out the car. The male was at the car for about 15 minutes and at one point David saw him on the phone and he was told by the suspect that he was talking to his girlfriend. He said she was on her way to also look at the car. David then went back into the building, he returned a few minutes later and the Charger and the man were both gone. He told Police the man exited the lot onto White Oak Drive and he did not see him leave.

David described the suspect as a black male in his late 30’s to early 40’s, 5’8 to 5’10, wearing a red shirt and blue jeans. He also said the male had a bloody scab on the tip of his nose.

A Sheriff’s Deputy on patrol spotted the Charger on Route 113 and called for assistance from the Elyria Police Department. Officers arrived and all 3 subjects in the car were pulled out and questioned.

The driver of the car, Dale Bugg Jr., was arrested and charged with Receiving Stolen Property, Fictitious Plates and Expired Operators License. The other two occupants were released.

ARREST MADE IN BOMB THREAT

Amherst – A 17 year old Marion L. Steele High School student has been arrested and charged in connection with the October 8th Bomb Threat made at the school.

Police say the male student made the call at 7:36 a.m. indicating that a bomb was going to go off in 2 hours and 37 minutes. The building was evacuated and Police and other emergency services responded to investigate. After a thorough search of the buildings and grounds students and faculty were allowed back in the building.

The Amherst Police Detective Bureau and school officials investigated the threat and as a result of the investigation information was obtained on where the call came from as well as who made the call.

The suspect’s father turned the juvenile into Police just before 9 a.m. this morning. Acting on advice from his father the teen refused to be interviewed by Detectives.

The teen was processed with finger prints and booking photos before being transferred to the Lorain County Detention Home.

The suspect was formally charged with Inducing Panic (F2), and Making False Alarms (F3).

Police say this juvenile also had an active warrant from the Lorain County Detention Home for a prior incident where he was charged by the Amherst Police Department in 2009 for Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, No Operators License, and Unsafe Vehicle.

OFFICER STILL BEING EVALUATED

UPDATE
Avon Lake – Avon Police Officer Pete Soto’s condition is still unknown at this hour as officials at MetroHealth Medical Center say that he is still being evaluated by Doctors.

Soto, who once worked for the Lorain Police Department before joining the Avon Police Department in August of 2009, sustained multiple injuries after a pickup truck pulled out of a driveway in front of him on Route 83. His injuries include a broken pelvis, leg and arm.

It has been reported that his condition was listed as “fair” but officials at MetroHealth were quick to correct that report saying he is still being evaluated.

The Avon Lake Police Department is investigating the crash.

POLICE OFFICER INVOLVED IN CRASH

Avon Lake – An Avon Police Officer was involved in a crash this morning on Route 83 between Pin Oak Parkway and Webber Road.

The Officer was on one of the Department’s motorcycles when he collided with a Ford F-150 pickup truck. It is believed that the Officer was working on a domestic call at the time of the crash. Witnesses at the scene say they believe the pickup truck pulled out a driveway into the path of the Officer.

The Officer was thrown from the bike and was pinned under the truck. Firefighters had to use airbags to raise the truck to free the Officer.

Avon Lake Paramedics from the Fire Department treated the Officer on the scene before transporting him to the Avon Emergency Care Center where he was then flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. His condition is unknown at this time but he was conscious and speaking with Paramedics at the scene.

SCHOOL RECEIVES BOMB THREAT

Amherst – Students and faculty at Marion L. Steele High School were evacuated this morning after school officials received a call at 7:29 a.m. from a person “indicating there was a bomb in the school and it was going to detonate within a few hours,” according to Lieutenant Joe Kucirek of the Amherst Police Department.

Kucirek said that after Police and school officials conferred it was decided to evacuate the high school students to two different school buildings.

Although some thought it was just a hoax, Kucirek said they still took it very seriously and took appropriate precautions as necessary and had the necessary resources on stand-by.

“There was no indication of any suspicious items or activity to cause further concern at this time,” Kucirek said.

Students were allowed back into the building after officials gave it the all clear.

SCHOOL BUS ROLLS AFTER COLLISION

NINE VICTIMS TAKEN TO AREA HOSPITALS

Carlisle Township – Nine people were transported with minor injuries Monday afternoon after a pickup truck collided with a school bus transporting students from Murray Ridge School.

Lieutenant Travis Hughes of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said the crash was caused by a driver failing to stop for a traffic light. “The bus was traveling north on Oberlin-Elyria Road as it crossed Butternut Ridge Road. The driver of the red pickup truck was traveling east on Butternut and failed to stop for the traffic light. The pickup entered the intersection striking the rear wheel area of the school bus causing it to spin around.”

As the bus spun around it crossed Oberlin-Elyria Road – the bus then went into a ditch where it rolled over onto its side.

“As we pulled up on the scene we first saw the school bus on its side,” Chief Kevin Dembiec of Carlisle Township Fire Department said. “We then learned from the bus driver that everyone had been able to exit the bus through the rear door and possibly the emergency exit through the roof.”

Bystanders assisted the school bus driver and others in taking care of the students while emergency crews were responding.

Paramedics from LifeCare and Central Lorain County Ambulance District treated and transported nine victims with the drivers of both vehicles refusing treatment or transport. In an attempt to not over burden any one hospital, victims were taken to Allen, Amherst and Elyria Memorial. All victims were reported to have only minor injuries.

Lt. Hughes said that the driver of the pickup will be charged with Failure to Yield a Red Light.

UPDATE: The State Patrol has released the names of both drivers tonight. The driver of the pickup truck is 58 year old Dale Wilczynski of Elyria and 62 year old Lenworth Mair was driving the school bus.

KIDS FOUND INSIDE NEW RESTAURANT

Elyria – Elyria Police Certified four teens Sunday afternoon for Breaking & Entering after they were spotted going into a back door at 605 Chestnut Commons just after 4 p.m.

An alert neighbor spotted four boys at the rear of 605 Chestnut Commons at 4:15 p.m. Sunday afternoon. The witness called Police when they saw the boys enter one of the doors near the new BMV. The witness told Police four boys entered with two bicycles.

When Police arrived they entered through the back door and found the youths inside. They ordered the four to lay down on the floor so they could be searched.

The boys told Police they had been playing and entered the building only to get in out of the rain. They said they were just “hanging out.”

The building is currently under construction to be the new El Patron Mexican Grill. Police say there is a lot of construction equipment and materials inside the building but said it didn’t appear that anything had been damaged.

Police made contact with parents of 3 of the kids and made them come to the scene to retrieve them. The fourth child was turned over to his teenage sister after Police could not reach his mother.

All four were Certified to Juvenile Court and parents were advised they would be contacted by the courts through the mail.

Officials have released the name of the driver as 49 year old Robert Kendra of Wellington. It is believed that Kendra suffered a heart attack or stroke just prior to driving off the road and into the front porch of 111 Eastern Heights Blvd. Friday night.

Neighbors expressed their concerns about this crash because they were just getting cleaned up from a similar one that occurred just four months ago. In June of this year a man who had assaulted his girlfriend and was running from the Police also lost control of his car coming from 4th Street and went into the yards on Eastern Heights. In June however, none of the houses were struck only trees, signs and garbage cans before rolling his car over and coming to rest in someone’s front yard.

The homeowner of 111 Eastern Heights said they just bought the home 8 months ago and already they have experienced two serious crashes in their own front yard. They are keeping their fingers crossed that they have seen the last crash.

WHEN YOU RUN OUT OF ROAD

Carlisle Township – A LaGrange man was arrested Friday night after he crashed his Mustang into a guardrail at the dead end of Butternut Ridge Road.

Trooper Al Marcum from the Ohio State Highway Patrol said that 23-year-old Michael Nabor was traveling west on Butternut off of Route 301 at a high rate of speed before crashing. Nabor told Troopers that he didn’t know the roadway was a dead end street.

Nabor was arrested at the scene for OVI and while being searched Troopers found the narcotic Mushrooms in his pocket.

Nabor was charged with OVI, Failure to Control and Possession Felony Narcotics.

JEEP GOES OFF ROAD – STRIKES HOUSE

DRIVER DIES AT HOSPITAL

Elyria – One man is dead after a single car crash Friday night on Eastern Heights Blvd.

Elyria Police Investigators are now trying to piece together what happen that caused the driver to go off the road Friday around 9pm. The Jeep was traveling eastbound on 4th Street before crossing East River. The Jeep then went off the right side of the road and traveled across 3 yards before slamming into a front porch.

Witnesses who called 9-1-1 said the man was not moving or speaking.

Elyria Firefighters worked to extricate the driver while LifeCare Paramedics began treating him inside of the Jeep. The driver was removed through the passenger side back door. He was then loaded into the back of an ambulance where Paramedics treated the man further before transporting him to Elyria Memorial Hospital. A Metro LifeFlight helicopter medical team was waiting at EMH for the victim but Doctors pronounced the victim dead inside of the emergency room.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
