DINE TO DONATE AT WOLFEY’S – FINAL DAY

Today is the final day in fundraiser Wolfey’s Bistro & Pub’s Dine to Donate to the Kerstetter 5K Run / 1 Mile Family Fun Walk.

WOLFEY’S BISTRO & PUB is located at 1069 E Broad Street in Elyria.

Wolfey’s has committed to donate 10% of ALL SALES from open to close on each Tuesday in May to the Kerstetter 5K – today is the final Tuesday and we would like to help increase their donation.

Last year Wolfey’s donated just under $3,000.00 to the K5K and we want to help increase that donation for this year – with your help we might just be able to achieve that goal.

You can go in for lunch, dinner or just stop by for a drink and an appetizer.

DRIVER GOES OFF THE ROAD ON RT 58 – CRASHES INTO TREE

 

South Amherst – A single car crash sent one man to the hospital early Saturday morning after the driver went off the right side of the road.

Lieutenant Travis Hughes of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said the driver of a black Ford Focus was traveling southbound on Route 58 when the crash occurred. “As he approached the curve the evidence shows he went right off the road. The car first clipped a utility pole causing the car to turn and continue sliding across the front lawn of a vacant house. The car then struck a tree stump causing it to spin again and then came to rest.

South Amherst Firefighters extricated the driver from the car as Paramedics from CLAD treated the man who was conscious but disoriented. He was later transported to Cleveland for further treatment.

A witness said he saw a yellow turn signal off the side of the road and turned around to go back and checkout what it was. He said he was glad he did cause the car was so far off the road and in a very dark area.

Lt. Hughes said that the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

CHURCH GROUP IN TRAINING FOR THE KERSTETTER 5K RUN

Members of “OXYGEN” the Youth Group at Elyria’s Cross Community Church on North Abbe have been in training for this year’s Kerstetter 5K Run. Youth Minister Carissa Wright said the group discussed various missions they could get involved in this year when the idea of staying right here in town and supporting a local community event came up. “What an excellent way to be involved in a great community event with such a focus on health. For many of us this will be the first 5K we have participated in and everybody is excited about it.”

Wright said the Kerstetter 5K is a perfect fit for their group. “The event incorporates the community, family, health and a celebration of Jim’s life. I still remember him coming here to the Church to speak about the Block Watch. This was a no brainer to get involved and I strongly encourage other Churches and youth groups to get involved as well.”

About 20 people ranging in age from 12 to 52 have signed up from Cross Community Church with others signing up to do the walk.

DRIVER CRITICAL AFTER LATE NIGHT CRASH

 

Elyria Township – A late night crash on I-90, just west of Route 57, in the westbound lane sent two people to the hospital with the driver being flown from scene in critical condition.

Trooper Lance Deshuk of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said that driver of a 2006 Chevy Silverado was entering I-90 westbound from State Route 57 just after 2am Sunday morning when he lost control of the truck. “The driver lost control and went off the right side of the road through the grass and struck a tree on the driver’s side. Both the driver and passenger we trapped inside of the vehicle when we arrived.”

Firefighters from Elyria Township responded and after assessing the situation called for mutual aid from Elyria Fire to assist in extrication.

Elyria Township Firefighters were able to extricate the female passenger fairly quickly but the driver was pinned in tight. Captain Tim Midkiff of the Elyria Township Fire Department said that one of the challenges in extricating the driver was the fact that just beyond the tree that the pickup struck was an approximate 8 to 10 foot drop off into a ditch.

 

Once Elyria Firefighters arrived with their additional extrication equipment and manpower the scene was again reassessed. Realizing that the extrication was going to be very prolonged they decided they would need even more manpower and equipment on scene. Initially they had called for Lorain Fire Department but just a couple miles down the highway Sheffield Village Firefighters were clearing from another crash on I-90 near the Black River Bridge so they were requested to respond.

Aiding in the rescue was Paramedics from LifeCare Ambulance, a University MED EVAC Medical Team, and Mug’s Elyria Auto Service.

Firefighters had Mug’s attach chains to the front and rear of the vehicle and slowly pull the truck off the tree that it had embedded itself into approximately 12 inches. This allowed Firefighters more freedom to cut the roof off of the truck.

Shortly after the roof was removed a backboard was lowered down into the driver’s compartment from a Firefighter standing in the bed of the truck. After the victim was strapped onto the board he was removed from the vehicle and moved to the back of a LifeCare Squad where his treatment continued with Medics and the MED EVAC team. He was then move to the helicopter and flown to Cleveland in critical condition.

The names of the victims have not yet been released.

Both Captain Tim Midkiff of the Elyria Township Fire Department and Captain Joe Pronesti from the Elyria Fire Department commented about how well the operation went. Midkiff said it was truly a team effort and was grateful for all of the Departments that assisted in the rescue. Pronesti echoed Midkiff’s statement about the team work. “In terms of everyone working together this was one of the best that I’ve ever seen.”

Midkiff listed those assisting in the rescue operation as Elyria Township Firefighters, Elyria Firefighters, Ohio State Patrol, LifeCare Ambulance Paramedics, Sheffield Village Firefighters, Mug’s Elyria Auto and University MED EVAC.

Trooper Deshuk said the crash remains under investigation.

DRIVER CRASHES INTO TREES ON FOWL

Elyria – An Elyria man was almost home when he lost control of his car and went into a wooded area on Fowl Road just off of West Ridge Road.

Police say 24 year old Rudolph Martinez of Fowl Road was traveling west on Fowl when he lost control of his 2008 Mazda 3 and went off the right side of the road. Martinez plowed through the woods taking down trees and shrubs before coming to rest buried in the woods.

Martinez was able to extricate himself from the mangled car and was waiting on the side of the road as Police arrived on scene. As Martinez waited for LifeCare Paramedics a bystander walked by and told him, “you know you can’t park there right?” Martinez replied, “I didn’t know that.”

LifeCare Paramedics treated Martinez at the scene and then transported him to Elyria Memorial Hospital.

Police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The Law Enforcement TORCH RUN for SPECIAL OLYMPICS is open to all Law Enforcement personnel, their family members and significant others.

 

A $25.00, tax deductible donation to the Ohio Special Olympics, is requested. The donation includes a Torch Run t-shirt.

This is NOT A RACE, simply a group run that benefits a great cause. The run is kept at a pace manageable for most people. This year everyone will run the approximate 5 mile route together. Participants are also welcome to join the group at the half-way point, or run a shorter distance if you’d like.  

Also new this year is BREAKFAST AT THE END OF THE RUN courtesy of our friends at BLACK DOG PUB & EATERY in North Ridgeville.

This is a great warm-up for the Kerstetter 5K!

DRIVER RUNS FROM TROOPER – CRASHES & FLEES

Elyria – An Ohio State Trooper watched a driver blow through a red light in Elyria early Friday morning and when she attempted to stop the vehicle the driver sped away.

The driver made a right turn onto Turner Street from West River Road South – picked up speed and then lost control. The driver smashed into a parked car, a large concrete cylinder - throwing it 15 feet and tipping it over, then pushed the parked car into the back of a Mugs’ Elyria Auto Tow truck that was parked on the street.   

The driver, a black male wearing blue jeans and a black jacket, ran from the car and into a wooded area towards the river leaving behind two injured females inside of the Jeep.

LifeCare Paramedics and Elyria Firefighters treated the two victims before transporting them to Elyria Memorial Hospital.

The crash remains under investigation.

LORAIN DUPLEX FIRE CAUSES $40K IN DAMAGES

Lorain – There were no reported injuries in Wednesday afternoon’s fire at 1812 East 30^th Street but the fire did cause approximately $40 in damages.

None of the residents were home when the fire broke out and Firefighters say they were delayed getting to the scene after callers gave the wrong address.

When Firefighters arrived they found smoke and flames coming from the large structure and called for mutual aid from Elyria requesting their Tower truck and manpower.

Although the fire remains under investigation Firefighters believe electrical issues were the cause.

TWO INJURED IN ROLL OVER CRASH ON ROUTE 58

Pittsfield Township – A two-car collision Saturday afternoon in Pittsfield sent two people to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities say the crash involved a black Ford work van that was traveling east on Route 303 and a Chevy Blazer that was traveling north on Route 58. The collision occurred in the intersection with both drivers saying they had the green light. The Blazer struck the rear drivers side of the van causing it to spin and eventually roll over. Both drivers were able to get out of their vehicles on their own.

Wellington Fire District Firefighters and CLCAD Paramedics treated both drivers at the scene before transporting them to Allen Hospital in Oberlin.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Each Tuesday in May Wolfey’s Bistro & Pub in Elyria has committed once again to donating 10% of all sales from open to close to this year’s Kerstetter 5K Run / Family Fun Walk.

In 2011 Wolfey’s donated just under $3,000.00 to the event and are hoping to raise even more this year.

Make sure you stop by Wolfey’s during these fundraisers and enjoy a great meal, even if it’s a to-go order, and help the Kerstetter 5K!

Scott & Wendy from Wolfey’s have really stepped up for the Kerstetter 5K with this Dine to Donate program. While other restaurants offer a Dine to Donate program here is the difference… With others the group receiving the donations would have to pass out fliers to friends and family and encourage them to go eat at the restaurant. There would be a 2 or 3 hour window that the restaurant would pick to donate a percentage of the sales only from the people with the fliers.

In the case of Wolfey’s, the Kerstetter 5K receives 10% of ALL SALES on Tuesdays, from open to close, in May. No fliers, no special times.

We at the Kerstetter 5K could not be happier or prouder to have such a phenomenal partner and we encourage everybody to stop by Wolfey’s and let Scott & Wendy know how much their generosity is appreciated by this community. (We of course would prefer that you do this on each and every Tuesday in May)

MOTHER AND DAUGHTER INJURED IN ROLL OVER CRASH

Elyria – A mother and daughter were both injured early Tuesday morning after crashing on Route 57, just north of Cleveland Street.

Police say 36 year old Kiesha Betton of Elyria was traveling south on Route 57 in a 2003 Bravada when Betton lost control and went off the roadway rolling the car before coming to a stop just north of Cleveland Street. Police say neither excessive speed nor alcohol played a part in the crash.

Assistant Chief Ron Brlas of the Elyria Fire Department said Police Officers had assisted Betton’s 11 year old daughter out of the vehicle before they arrived. “The mother had significant injuries so we got inside and assisted her out safely to prevent any additional injuries.”

LifeCare Paramedics treated and transported both Betton and her 11 year old daughter to Elyria Memorial Hospital. Although the daughter’s injuries were listed as minor her mother had to be transferred to a Cleveland hospital for further treatment.

DRIVER CRASHES INTO 3 PARKED CARS AND 2 TREES

Elyria – An Elyria man was arrested Sunday night after crashing into three parked cars and a tree on Olive Street.

Police say 36 year old Bob Watson of Elyria was traveling north on Olive Street when he lost control of his van and smashed into the back of a parked car. Watson then back up and continued and struck another parked car (red car named Roxy). Watson then back up and drove up into the tree lawn where he damaged a tree then continued north where he struck another car and went head on into a tree.

Neighbors and damaged car owners were outside by this time saying the crashes sounded like loud gunshots. When they saw Watson attempting to back up and leave again they jumped into action by going to his van and grabbing his keys. Watson then attempted to run away but witnesses prevented him from getting far.

When Police arrived one car owner said Watson told the Officer that he wasn’t the driver of the van. 

Police arrested Watson and charged him with Reckless Operation and OVI.
