CAR TAKES OUT MAILBOXES – SLAMS INTO HOUSE

Sheffield Township – Debris was strewn all along the 4000 block of Clifton Ave Sunday night after a car went off the road and took out multiple mailboxes before slamming into a house.

Trooper Charlie Jackson of the Ohio State Patrol said 25 year old Terry Cavin of Lorain was traveling north on Clifton Ave when he went off the right side of the road and began striking mailboxes. “In total he struck 5 mailboxes before crashing into the front corner of this home. The distance from the first mailbox that was struck to the home was approximately 400 feet.”

Cavin and his passenger were both able to get out of the car before Firefighters arrived on scene.

Firefighters treated both men before transporting them to the hospital. They were both transported to Cleveland for further treatment.

Jackson said Cavin would be charged with OVI, Failure to Control and Driving without a License.

THREE INJURED IN ROLL OVER CRASH

New Russia Township – Three people were injured early Friday morning after a single car crash on Hamilton Road.

Trooper Lance Deshuk of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said the 2012 Nissan Altima was traveling south on Parsons when the driver failed to negotiate the curve that would then take the car east. The car took out a reflective arrow sign, went through a fence, rolled down a hill and then rolled a number of times before coming to rest near Route 20.

The driver of the car has been identified as 27 year old Maurice Newell of Elyria. The two passengers have been identified as 31 year old Melissa Stowers of Vermilion and 29 year old Keeon Green of Elyria.

Two of the three victims were transported by LifeCare Paramedics to Mercy Allen Hospital Emergency Room and later taken to Cleveland. The third victim was taken from the scene directly to Cleveland.

Deshuk said alcohol was a contributing factor.

“COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP – WE HAVE THE HOUSE SURROUNDED”

Elyria – Those are the words neighbors in the 500 block of State Street heard Monday evening during some tense moments as Police attempted to talk a man out of a house.

Elyria Police were called to the area after Floyd Ball reported that Robert Harvey was chasing him around the neighborhood with a gun. Ball told Police the problem was an ongoing issue over a mutual ex-girlfriend.

Ball said he walking on Fuller Road when he spotted Harvey coming towards him on a bike. Ball said Harvey yelled to him, “don’t start running now bitch.” At that point Ball began jogging towards Nelson Street in an attempt to get away from Harvey. A short time later Ball saw Harvey again, this time on foot, jogging towards him with what appeared to be a black handgun or sawed off shotgun. Ball said Harvey yelled, “bitch, what’s up?” Ball said that Harvey ran back towards 532 State Street when the two men heard the Police sirens.

As Officers arrived they quickly surrounded the home and began calling over a loud speaker for Mr. Harvey to come out with his hands up and that the residence was surrounded. This went on for about 10 minutes before Harvey exited the front door with his hands up. He was then taken into custody without incident. Harvey refused to give Officers permission to search the home at that time.

Later at the Police station during an interview Harvey said he had a small axe handle in his backpack but never threatened anyone. He told Officers that the axe could be found in the bed of his father’s truck parked in the driveway.

Harvey told Police that Ball was dating his ex-girlfriend and that around Thanksgiving of 2011 Ball had sucker punched him so he felt he needed to carry the axe because he feels Ball “fights dirty.”

Harvey was charged with Aggravated Menacing and Menacing by Stalking.

DRIVER ARRESTED FOR THREATS AFTER CRASH

Elyria – Officers in Elyria were dispatched to a non-injury crash Friday night on Tillotson and the 49th Street Bridge. What began as a seemingly routine call quickly escalated as calls to Elyria Police Dispatch reported one driver was threatening the other driver.


When Officers arrived on scene they first separated the two parties to find out what happened.


The crash itself occurred just before 7 p.m. Friday night when Jennifer Kevick of Elyria was crossing Tillotson from the 49th Street Bridge into the Mark’s parking lot in her 1996 Buick Regal and was struck by David Komadina of Lorain who was traveling north on Tillotson. Both drivers told Police they had a green light.


After the crash Kevick and other witnesses say that Komadina exited his car and began yelling at Kevick. The yelling and threats became so heated with Komadina calling Kevick a “fucking hillbilly bitch” and saying, “I’ll kick your ass”, Kevick got back in her car and locked her door. Witnesses say Komadina continued to yell and pound on the windows.


Officers took Komadina into custody and charged him with Menacing.

Komadina’s parents were called to the scene to take control of the dog that was in the car at the time of the crash. Until they arrived Officer Jim Rider of the Elyria Police Department attempted to comfort “Beaner” the chocolate Lab. Rider’s kindness to the pup was rewarded with a smooch from the k9.

Elyria – An Elyria man was arrested late Tuesday night after he reportedly slammed his 2008 Grand Am into the back of a parked on Oak Street.


Police say 29 year old Thomas Blaylock of High Street in Elyria lost control of his car while traveling west on Oak Street and struck a parked car. That car was then pushed into another parked car causing damage to both. Witnesses say Blaylock then backed up and drove away. Police were able to locate Blaylock several blocks away in the 400 block of High Street. Blaylock’s car was parked in his driveway with a damaged front end.


Police took Blaylock into custody and transported him to the Lorain County Jail where he was refused because of his intoxicated state so he was then taken to Elyria Memorial.


Blaylock was charged with Reasonable Control and OVI.

STOLEN CAR CRASHES AFTER CHASE

Elyria – Imagine driving down the road and spotting your car that had been stolen just a couple days earlier. Brett Sobeck had that happen to him this past Saturday when he spotted his 2006 Cadillac DTS traveling northbound on Route 57 near Chestnut Ridge Road.


Sobeck had parked at the East Broad Street Speedway gas station on Friday and left the keys in the still running car as he went inside. When Sobeck returned the car was gone. A stolen car from an Olmsted Falls Speedway gas station was left behind. Police in Olmsted Falls found another stolen vehicle at that had also been taken from the East Broad Street Speedway.

When Sobeck spotted his car he called Elyria Police and alerted them that he was following his car. Officers set up on Cleveland Street near 57 and fell in behind the Cadillac as it passed.


Officers attempted to stop the car and at one point it appeared the driver was going to stop but then sped up hitting speeds of 80MPH.


The driver, 34 year old Robert Sherry of Parma, made a right turn onto West River Road North and right into the construction zone.

The chase came to a stop after Sherry attempted to get past a car that was turning left onto Market Drive by Home Depot and struck the car. Both cars came to rest in the intersection.


Officers pulled Sherry out of the car and after a brief struggle he was taken into custody.


There were no injuries reported in the crash.

Robert Sherry was charged for Receiving Stolen Property, Failure to Comply and Reckless Operation.


Police also cited Sobeck for leaving keys in an unattended vehicle.
