8 YEAR OLD ATTACKED BY PIT BULL
An 8 year old boy is being treated at MetroHealth Medical Center for injuries he received after being attacked by a Pit Bull in Lorain Wednesday afternoon.
LifeCare Ambulance Vice President Herb de la Porte said that Paramedics responded to 906 W. 22nd Street in Lorain just before 5pm Wednesday for a "boy bit by a dog". When Paramedics arrived they found that the boy had received severe bites to his left arm. The Paramedics on scene quickly requested that Metro LifeFlight be dispatched to the hospital.
LifeCare transported the child to Community Health Partners West Campus where they were met by LifeFlight at the helipad. The LifeFlight medical crew took over patient care and flew the child to MetroHealth Medical Center for further treatment. His condition is unknown at this time.
Lorain Police had control of the Pit Bull immediately following the incident and was speaking with the animal’s owner. Lorain Animal Control was also called to the scene.

This is outrageous! These people need to keep their dogs in check. We have an American Bulldog and people look at us like we are crazy even though she isn't a pit bull...because of dogs like this they are all classed together in the eyes of society. What a shame!
I hear ya achenoweth, we raise bull terriers, the Target dogs, and get the same looks. They think OUR dogs are pits, too. We worked very hard with socialization and training with our dogs, in fact, my one dog is a certified therapy dog, and these things do give our dogs a bad name. Also though, you wont often see on the front page of any news or ON the news a lab, a golden retriever, a chihuahua bite making the paper. That happens ALOT and isnt reported with the fervor that the pits generate!
Click on my name to play a game, identify the pit bull. Many people *THINK* it is a pit, when it is not.
Dude, if you get bit by a Lab or Golden YOU DID SOMETHING to deserve it. Well, that and it's always just a bite, not a mauling. I've met many pitbulls who very friendly but I would NEVER go near one w/o knowing that it had a capable owner. Too often these dogs are not socialized to be around humans, or worse.
Dogs are just like kids....they take on much of the personality as the person training them, bet if you took a close look into these maulings youd find that the owners could be on that one commercial......Brilliant!!!
Well, anonymous, you sure are putting the responsiblity on the people who get bit, if only labs and goldens would only bite when provoked. As an owner of a therapy dog and previous vet tech, all dogs can and DO bite. They bite when they dont feel well, if they are unsocialized, if they feel they are dominant (and even a chihuahua can rule a house if the owners let it....)
Click my name and read the link.
Pit bulls were bred to do two things, to kill (bear/badger/etc. baiting) and to fight one another. It is most definitely not the dogs' fault as they are simply doing what they are programmed, genetically and sometimes socially, to do.
Now, I think that with your extensive experience with dogs you will admit that a Golden or Lab will generally only bite when scared or under extreme physical duress, not when an eight year old kid goes for a ball that it too is going for.
The sad thing is that people feel need to propgate the idea that "these dogs are no more dangerous than a lab or retriever". The dog might be perfectly friendly, but a little caution never hurt anyone...instead we have unecessary maulings so that people can feel better about "helping" these animals.

DONNA YOUR GAME IS A JOKE. WHEN A KID GETS BITTEN BY A DOG THAT LOOKS LIKE A PIT THATS WHAT ITS CALLED. CALL IT A CANE CORSO OR A PRESA CANARIO IT IS STILL A VICIOUS DOG AND CALLED A PIT BULL. YOU CAN'T TELL ME THAT YOUR CANE CORSO OR PRESA CANARIO NEVER BITTEN SOMEONE AND WAS CALLED A PIT BULL BY THE OWNER OR POLICE. THIS KIDS ARM WILL NEVER BE THE SAME. HOW DO YOU TELL HIM ITS OK, OR DO YOU JUST LET THIS TYPE OF DOG KEEP RUNNING FREE AND BITE ANOTHER KID. YOU CAN'T HAVE A DOG LIKE THIS IN AMHERST AND IT'S TIME WE DID THE SAME IN LORAIN AND ELYRIA.
Thank you anon

My brother has two pit bulls and he had one before these two. It's all in the training of the dog. My brother has trained his oldest to be gentle. The second is a puppy and he's currently train her the same way. My brother doesn't train them to fight. He has trained them to be a good family pet. My one year old nephew is around them all the time. Never have they attempt to bit or attack him. Pitbulls have been around my family for years. I got bit by a rottweiller. That isn't a dog you hear much about. So, it's all in the training. You train them to be mean and they will. You train them to be nice and they will. All creatures of the world will protect themselve if they feel threatened.
To the previous blogger who said Pit Bulls aren't allowed in Amherst... WRONG! I am a proud owner of a beautiful red nose pit, who is the most gentle dog you will ever meet, and I live in Amherst. I have checked with my city and they required me to register him, obviously, and have a rider on my home owners insurance. I know a family with yet another pit just like mine who live in Amherst, and of which the father is a vet with a reputable clinic in Amherst! They too swear by this breed!
My dog plays with all the neighborhood kids on a daily basis, literally. He is such an amazingly intelligent dog that he treats them even more gently because they are children. They even play catch with him, throwing and fetching the ball for/from him over and over.
It's all about how these dogs are being raised. Punish the deed [of the owner] and not the breed!! You reap what you sow. If you raise children to be violent they will lash out and the law would hold none other than the parents accountable for their actions as juveniles.
I write this in defense of my pit and the family he came from. I know his grandfather, mother, and father. All of whom are loyal, kind dogs that have never hurt anyone. I wish people could see how amazing of a breed they are and supposed to be when they are nurtured with love.
Donna -- thanks for your "find the pit" link. That was sweet! I sent it on to many family and friends.
Your welcome to the owner of the red nosed pit!! I love your breed as well, they are wonderful pets.
They are NOT for everyone, they are strong willed, have high prey drives and need a dominant owner....but many who aquire such breeds do so for looks, status, etc, without researching (or caring) about the breed.
Now to the all caps person...
DONNA YOUR GAME IS A JOKE. WHEN A KID GETS BITTEN BY A DOG THAT LOOKS LIKE A PIT THATS WHAT ITS CALLED.
So if you owned a boxer, a nutty friendly dog by trait, and it bit someone, you wouldnt mind it being refered to as a pit? Your comment is pretty stupid. A pit bull is a breed, just like a border collie, chihuahua, labrador, you get my drift. But it is ok to lump any dog that bites into a pit bull catagory? Unfair to all the dogs on that page (including MY breed)who take pride in ownership and responsiblity for their pets.
THIS KIDS ARM WILL NEVER BE THE SAME. HOW DO YOU TELL HIM ITS OK, OR DO YOU JUST LET THIS TYPE OF DOG KEEP RUNNING FREE AND BITE ANOTHER KID.
Comments like this always amaze me. Never said the kid deserved it, provoked it, or that I am UNAWARE that it was awful and that he got serious injuries. Or that the dog shouldnt be dealt with, sent to an expert to assess why the dog did it. I am, in fact a 911 operator who was working that day and my partner got the call. I got to hear it myself.
Bottom line, kids should be supervised around dogs. Period.
