– After an lengthy search today for a man that robbed the 5/3 Bank at Broad and
East Ave Elyria Police, with the help of Deputies from the Lorain County
Sheriff’s Office and Officers from North Ridgeville, apprehended 26 year Bryan
Long. Long is one of the two men who had escaped from the Lorain – Medina Based
Correctional Facility on Sunday. Long and his fellow escapee were spotted by
the Elyria Public Library Monday afternoon – the other escapee was captured by
a Lorain County Sheriff’s Deputy but Long got away.
Long
is suspected as being the man who walked into the 5/3 Bank on Broad Street just
before 2 Thursday afternoon and handed a robbery note to the teller. No gun was
displayed but the note indicated that the robber had one on him.
The
robber fled from the bank northbound on East Ave by Bill Bakers and into the
trees. Police began searching the wooded area as well as the railroad tracks
and riverbanks. Lorain County Sheriff’s Deputies and North Ridgeville Police Officers
joined in the search. Police K9’s, Stuka, from Elyria and Ozzie from the
Sheriff’s Office were also involved in tracking the robber.
A
Sergeant from Elyria Police spotted the suspect under the railroad trestle
behind Kerns Cleaners on East Bridge Street. Officers and K9’s swarmed the area
blocking off part of East Bridge for a period of time.
Officers
tracked the suspect along the riverbanks and in the river until he was finally
spotted in the river behind the old Harshaw Chemical Plant near Mound Street.
Officers surrounded him and when he refused to come out of the water they called
for a boat from the Elyria Fire Department. A short time later he exited the
water and surrendered to Officers.
The
one that got away is now sitting at the Lorain County Jail.
