ELYRIA TEEN FLEES AFTER CRASH

Elyria – An Elyria teen crashed his car on West Ave, ran from Police then later called to report his car stolen.

Police say that 19 year old Ryan Ross of Elyria was traveling south on West Ave at a high rate of speed as he passed a Police Officer that was sitting at the stop sign on 15th Street and West. The Officer believed the car was traveling approximately 100 MPH. As the Officer turned to go after the car it crashed into the front yard of 1703 West Ave.

The Officer pulled up behind the crash and saw that the driver was unable to get out of the driver’s side door so he exited through the passenger side and ran west on 17th Street. The Officer started down 17th and cut off the teen who then doubled back and began running east on 17th back towards West Ave – running right past the Officer.

Police set up a perimeter and searched the area for the teen but were unable to locate him.

While still conducting the crash investigation, about 45 minutes after the crash had occurred, the teen called the Police station to report his car stolen. The teen told a Police Dispatcher that he had just returned home to find his car missing and stated that his Mother had left the keys in his car.

Police went to his residence on Parmely Ave to hear his story. Ross told Officers that he had been at a friend’s house in Westway Gardens prior to coming home and finding his car missing. Officers called his friend to confirm the story but his friend said that Ross had not been at his house. After learning that the Officer saw him fleeing the scene and that he could be charged with filing a false police report Ross fessed up telling Officers that it was him that crashed and ran. Ross told Officers that he was just scared, that is why he lied.

Ross was charged with Reckless Operation, Obstructing Official Business and Leaving the Scene of an Accident.
