POLICE CAPTURE HOMICIDE SUSPECT

Elyria – Less than 24 hours after a man robbed and murdered a GAS USA clerk in Elyria – Police have taken a man into custody.

Lieutenant Andy Eichenlaub of the Elyria Police Department said that the investigation by Detectives led Police to a residence on West Ave early this morning. “At 12:17 last night we investigated a robbery – homicide at GAS USA at 824 Middle Ave. The video coverage of that led us to this address at 1020 West Ave. We contacted the owners here and learned that the suspect that we were looking for was located in the upstairs of the house. The suspect had a 4-year-old child and a 4-month-old child with him in the upstairs of the house. The negotiators talked to him for some time and convinced him to let the 4 year old go – the 4 year old came down and he was released to his mother. A short time after that he turned himself in without incident and the 4 month old was returned unharmed to his mom.”

Lt. Eichenlaub said that at this point Officers are waiting for a search warrant to arrive so they can execute that and begin their search for the weapon used and any additional evidence.

Continue to check back as information comes in we’ll bring it to you.

When is somthing going to be done about the south side, I use to live right around the conner of gas usa ( 20 yrs ago) It was a nice place at one time, you wont catch me after dark in that part of town. I have a rental 2 streets down..it is now up for sale, its just not safe there anymore.

Your right its NOT safe and this BLOCK watch craze that is hitting the city is NOT doing anything either.
NO the BLOCK watches could not stop this shooting, but there is so much going on over here that the watch is utterly INEFFECTIVE. They meet to discuss dogs barking, noisy neighbors and speeding.
Now SEND is under investigation by the FBI, the area is become a slum again.

GAS USA is a small part of the problem. The watch has tried to shut this guy down and because Larkins wanted them open SEND and the VBLOCK watch ran a campaign for a guy who barely knows how to speak and he wins because Larkins wanted Gas usa OPEN.
sad day in Elyria.

I live on the south side and it is actually a lot better and safer then it used to be. The block watch has done a great deal, it has empowered the citizens to know they are not alone and they need not be afraid. Meetings have changed from being about drug dealers and crime to about dogs barking and noisy neighbors. (which is good!, meaning there is nothing major for people to report)I used to see drug deals every day, now I have seen only a couple in months.

The guy who did this murder was only in town for a couple weeks and was from Chicago. This was not committed by a local.

And SEND is NOT under investigation, the former director is.

Larkins was in denial that there were any problems in the 5th ward and it was time for him to go. His replacement, Krischer, may not speak eloquently but he has a lot of passion for his new job and is a great advocate for the south side.
