FIRE DESTROYS GIFFORD ROAD HOME

South Amherst – A Gifford Road home was destroyed Sunday evening after being consumed by fire.

South Amherst Firefighters were called to the home around 2:30pm for a possible structure fire. 9-1-1 Dispatchers informed responding Firefighters that everyone had gotten out of the home to safety.

Heavy black smoke could be seen as far away as Lorain.

When Firefighters arrived they found heavy fire in the garage area and immediately called for additional Fire Departments for mutual aid.

The fire spread all through the home while Firefighters from Amherst, Camden Township and Florence battled the blaze.

Central Lorain County Paramedics were called to check out the homeowner, who had been sitting with his wife in the front yard watching the Firemen work. Paramedics were about to transport him as a precaution when they were notified of a Fireman down. While another ambulance was called from Oberlin one of the other Paramedics held off transporting the homeowner to check out the Firefighter.

After administering some oxygen the Paramedic informed the responding ambulance that he was suffering from exhaustion and possible smoke inhalation. He then continued to transport the homeowner and a few minutes later the other team of Medics arrived and transported the Firefighter to Mercy Regional as a precaution.

No other injuries were reported.

The fire remains under investigation.
