MAN FOUND DEAD IN AMHERST HOME

Amherst – A 52 year old Amherst man was found dead inside of his North Main Street home Monday afternoon when his mother grew concerned after not hearing from him for several days.

Lieutenant Joe Kucirek of the Amherst Police Department said that they received a call from the neighbor of 1139 North Main St, the home of Charles Longworth, age 52. The caller advised Police that he was summoned to 1139 North Main by the mother of the Mr. Longworth. “The mother had come to her son's home to check on his wellbeing because she had not heard from him for a few days. The caller stated he opened the front door of Mr. Longworth's residence and immediately noticed the room had been on fire at some point and suffered heavy fire and smoke damage. The caller also indicated there was a deceased body on the floor just inside the front door.”

When Officers arrived they noticed heavy fire and smoke damage to the front living room area of the home. Windows in the front of the residence were also charred and it appeared several were broken from the heat of the fire.

Amherst Fire and LifeCare Paramedics also responded to the scene and the area was sealed off by Police.

The Amherst Police Detective Bureau was contacted as was the Lorain County Coroner's Office and the Ohio State Fire Marshal's Office to investigate further.

The Fire Department was requested to check for hot-spots on the exterior of the home with a Thermal Imager Camera and were unable to located any recent signs of a fire. Investigators are looking into when, where and how the fire was started. According to Police “there is no indication the fire was extinguished by human intervention.”

It was learned from family members that Mr. Longworth did have a medical condition which limited his ability to move about freely, but it is unknown if his medical condition was a factor in this incident.

At this time, the incident remains under investigation and no additional information is available until the coroner rules on the cause of death of Mr. Longworth.
