FOUND UNREPONSIVE BY FRIENDS
Call Time: 6:55 p.m. Sunday April 5, 2009Elyria – A 13 year old Elyria boy had to be carried out of Cascade Park on a backboard Sunday evening after falling about 50 feet down a hill.
The boy had been playing in a back yard on Phillip Court, just off of Lake Ave, Sunday afternoon before the accident occurred. The yard he had been playing in boarders Cascade Park, with only a portion of the yard having a fence. The boy’s girlfriend said that they had been shooting hoops in the back yard and they were using a soccer ball because the basketball was deflated at the time.
An errant shot went over the backboard and down the hill into the park. The girlfriend said the boy began hiking down the hill in an attempt to retrieve the ball when he lost his footing. “He was grabbing onto tree limbs and being careful but then he just slipped and went all the way down the hill and landed on the concrete in the park. I yelled his name but he wasn’t moving or answering me so I ran and got help. When we got down there he was out of it – he wasn’t talking or anything.”
LifeCare Paramedics, Elyria Firefighters and Police Officers arrived quickly and made their way to the boy. The boy was found lying still on his side on the concrete sidewalk that leads to the Lake Ave waterfalls. The boy was able to answer questions to the medics and his Mother who arrived a short time later.
Paramedics and Firefighters carefully secured the boy to a backboard and then carried him up the sidewalk to an awaiting cot and ambulance on Philip Court.
The boy was transported to Elyria Memorial Hospital and later flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.
