FOUR CAR REAR-ENDER ON 57

WELL, THREE CARS & ONE TANKER
Elyria Township – A four-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon sent three people to the hospital – all with non-life threatening injuries.

Elyria Township Firefighters are use to being toned out to car crashes on Route 57 near I-90 – Thursday when they were toned out however their ears perked up a little as the 9-1-1 Dispatcher informed them that a tanker truck was part of the collision.

Immediately after hearing that information Firefighters requested Lorain County Emergency Management to be dispatched to the scene. Tom Kelley, Director of Lorain County EMA & Homeland Security, heard the call and quickly responded. Kelley was one of the first to arrive on scene and directed his attention to the tanker. “Right away I saw the number “1203” on the back of the tanker so I knew it was just going to be a fuel oil and not a danger.” Kelley said the tanker was indeed loaded with 640 gallons of fuel oil but with no damage to the rear of the tanker there was no spill.

The collision was a 4-vehicle rear-ender at the stop light located stoplight in the southbound lane of 57 near the westbound entrance ramp to I-90.

A Jeep was the lead vehicle being struck by a Toyota Prius – The Prius was then struck from behind by a Ford Explorer who was then struck from behind by the Town & Country tanker truck.

Firefighters treated and transported a total of 3 victims, two with minor injuries and one with complaints of chest pains.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
