8-YEAR-OLD GIRL SHOT IN HEAD

10-YEAR-OLD BROTHER
BROUGHT GUN IN HOUSE

Elyria – Elyria Police are at this hour investigating an apparent accidental shooting that has left one 8-year-old girl in critical condition.

LifeCare Paramedics and Elyria Firefighters were called to 163 Lexington Ave Sunday afternoon for a reported possible full arrest. Captain Robert Donofrio of the Elyria Fire Department said they received the call at 4:01 pm – “We received the call as a possible full arrest so we assumed going in that it was going to be an older person having a heart attack but as we made our way through the house we weren’t able to find anyone in the house.”

Donofrio said that they saw nothing out of the ordinary or suspicious but then they weren’t looking for anything like that – “We have heard things since we left but at the time we just thought we were going on a medical call.”

LifeCare contacted police after they felt something was suspicious – at the same time Police received calls from the Emergency room about a gun shot victim that they were treating.

Police searched and secured the house immediately and waited for Detectives to arrive.

Police say that the victim, 8-year-old Najia Boone, was in an upstairs bedroom with her 10-year-old brother when they began to struggle with the gun – a .22 caliber handgun. The gun fired, striking Boone in the head. Boone’s Mother, 26-year-old Taneisha Craighead, took the children to the hospital herself instead of waiting for the Ambulance.

Authorities say that the Boone’s brother had taken the gun from a cousin’s house the day before without his mother’s knowledge.

The Elyria Police continue to investigate the shooting.

Najia Boone remains in critical condition at MetroHealth Medical Center.
