CAR FIRE ~ WITH A TWIST

Elyria – Elyria Firefighters were called to an apartment complex on Turner Blvd early Saturday night to extinguish a car fire. When Firefighters arrived they found a car towards the back of the lot fully involved in fire. Smoke from the fire could be seen from downtown Elyria.

What is normally a quick knock down took slightly longer – the fire didn’t seem to want to go out. It was like one of those annoying trick birthday candles, once it looked like it was out – it kicked up again. The problem was chemicals in the back seat of the car.

The owner of the car, Denise Smith, said she had been cleaning the inside of her car and had carpet cleaner, ammonia and Windex inside of the car when the fire broke out. Smith said that she attempted to start her car and that is when the fire broke out. She said she believes exposed wires from her satellite radio may have played a roll in the cause of the fire. Smith’s attempts to extinguish the fire on her own failed so she called 9-1-1.

Firefighters emptied the water supply that they carry on the engine so they quickly called for another Engine and began looking to tap into a hydrant. With only three Firefighters on Engine 3 and two of them were battling the fire, the other Firefighter began pulling a 5 inch hose off the back of the truck. Lending a hand was an Elyria Police Officer and a Sheriff’s Deputy.

With the hydrant providing water to the scene, two attack lines were used on the car and the fire was brought under control. Helping the Firefighters was the fact that the Deputy on scene is also a Lorain County Fire Investigator so he was able to jump in and help.

Now here is where the twist comes in. Once the blaze was extinguished Firefighters turned their attention to rolling up hoses and putting equipment away. This is when neighbors spotted someone trying to steal items out of the car. ShaRon said that she looked over and spotted a “thug” reaching into the car trying to steal something. When she yelled Firefighters and the car owner gave chase and the person fled through the wooded area towards West Ridge Road. Talk about kicking someone when they are down.

Is this standard procedure, reduced staffing, or other?

Holy Heck, the criminals have some stones to do that.. too bad the metal wasn't hot enough to burn the SOB.

So let me see, Elyria fire is low staffed and enlist the help to fight fires from the Sheriff's Deputies, who don't have enough deputies to cover the county, what is wrong with this picture. And to add this deputy does have the proper firefighting gear to be exposed to the fire. Should he not have been out on patrol in the county instead of in the city?

The Elyria Firefighters did not “enlist” the help from the Deputy, he and the Elyria Police Officer on scene jumped in and helped when it was needed.

As far as the Deputy being out of his service area, he is a “Lorain County” Deputy – he has jurisdiction all over Lorain County. The same as State Troopers have jurisdiction all over the State of Ohio.

I commend the Deputy for jumping in and helping the Firefighters. He went above and beyond the call of duty and did what needed to be done.

Wow, there are some people out there who just look for stuff to complain about. I also applaud this Deputy for helping the firemen. We all know departments throughout Lorain County are stretched thin, police and fire. The fact that this officer would get in there and help is the way it should be. Everyone teaming up and doing what needs to be done.

Keep up the good (team) work to all departments.

AS THE OWNER OF THE CAR, I THANK EVERYONE WHO WAS INVOLVED IN PUTTING OUT THE FIRE. IT IS SAD THAT THERE WAS AN OFFICER HELPING BUT I AM GLAD. IT COULD HAVE GOTTEN WORSE THAN WHAT IT WAS. I WAS PRAYING THAT IT DIDN'T SPREAD TO THE NEARBY CARS AND APARTMENTS. THIS WAS A SCARY THING TO WITNESS, AND I PRAY NO ONE HAS TO GO THRU THIS. AS FOR THE JERK THAT WAS TRYING TO GET INTO THE CAR AND TAKE STUFF.. YOUR DUMB! THE CAR JUST BURT TO A CRISP... THERE WASN'T ANYTHING LEFT TO TAKE. AND IT WAS IGNORANT OF ME TO CHASE YOU BUT I HAD NOT FULLY GRASPED WHAT HAD HAPPEND.. I WAS STILL PROTECTING MY CAR AND VALUABLES. IT WAS MY FIRST CAR EVER AND MY ONLY MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION SO WHY WOULDN'T I COME AFTER YOU. WHAT DO YOU THINK I WOULD DO, LET YOU TAKE ANYTHING OF MINE THAT COULD BE LEFT? BUT LIKE EVERYONE KEEPS REMINDING ME.. THE CAR WAS A MATERIAL THING.. IT CAN BE REPLACED... BUT PEOPLE CAN'T. THE ONLY THING THAT BOTHERS ME IS THAT IT TOOK OVER 10 MINUTES FOR THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TO GET HERE? WHY??

Another example of how we here in lorain county have some of the best law enforcement officers around.

Thanks deputy for going above and beyond.

With the budget constraints and number of concerned and involved citizens, perhaps there should be a voluntary (100% voluntary, not paid while working) fire team created and trained to assist on the scene with the fire dept?

That would assist the fire department by increasing the manpower and it would not hit the budget.

Thoughts?

AS A FELLOW FF/MEDIC, IT IS UNFORTUNATE REFERING TO THE POLITICAL/MONEY SITUATION ELYRIA AND EFD OUR IN AND THIS IS A COUNTRY WIDE PROBLEM FOR PUBLIC SAFETY DEPTS. ANYONE WHO COMMENTED ON THE PICS WAS NOT THERE, THEREFORE HAS NO ROOM TO JUDGE. ON THE OTHER HAND, FROM THE PICS, THE CAR ONLY APPEARS APROX 60% INVOLVED AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN EASILY CONTROLLED WITH THE TANK SUPPLY OF AT LEAST 700 GALLONS OF WATER. 3 MAN ENGINE COMPANIES IS BASICALLY NORMAL STAFFING NOW. THIS ENGINE COMPANY SHOULDN'T HAVE NEEDED TO WASTE THERE TIME DEALING W/ A WATER SUPPLY. AS FAR AS THE POLICE OFFICER, EFD (FROM WHAT IT APPEARS IN THE PICS)WAS DEALING W/ YOUR AVERAGE CAR FIRE, W/O A TRAPPED OCCUPANT OR EXPOSURE DANGER, PD HAS NO BUSSINESS TOUCHING A HOSE LINE.

The last person who commented was doing well right up to where he said, those who weren’t there in person have no room to judge. Then he went ahead and judged everything lol. There must have been a reason the officer jumped in and helped. I do not know what it was but I like the fact that he did.

TMC, maybe it is time to revisit just getting rid of the comments section. It seems that anymore it is just negative people writing nonproductive comments. I enjoy the site and love the photos, keep up the great work.

I THINK THE CONCEPT OF THE STORY GOT LOST SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY. IT IS NOT ABOUT WHO HELPED,OR WHY THEY HELPED,OR WHY THEY SHOULDN'T HAVE HELPED,OR WHAT THE CITY HAS DONE WRONG.. IT IS THE FACT THAT WHOM EVER HELPED DID A GREAT JOB AND SAVED THE OTHER CARS AND APARTMENT COMPLEX FROM CATCHING FIRE, AND RISKED THEIR WELL BEING IN ORDER TO TRY AND STOP THIS FROM BECOMING A CATASTROPY (SPELLING). I KNOW I WOULDN'T HAVE CARED IF A BYSTANDER HELPED, AS LONG AS NOBODY GOT HURT. YES I DO UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT OF TRAINED FIRE MEN/WOMEN, BUT JUST REMEMBER IF IT WAS YOU WOULDN'T YOU WANT ALL THE HELP YOU COULD GET??!! AND TO THE DEFENSE OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WHO TRIED TO SAVE MY CAR... MAYBE THEY THOUGHT THIS WAS A "QUICK PUT OUT" IF THIS WAS A HOUSE FIRE THE AMOUNT OF MEN WOULD HAVE BEEN UNACCEPTABLE AND THE OFFICER SHOULD NOT HAVE HELPED. BUT IT WASN'T IT WAS A CAR FIRE. I AM STILL A BIT YOUNG SO I MAY NOT UNDERSTAND FULLY HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS(PLEASE FORGIVE MY IGNORANCE),OR HOW LONG IT ACTUALLY TAKS TO GET TO A CALL, ALL I KNOW IS I AM GREATFUL FOR MEN/WOMEN LIKE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND THE POLICE DEPARTMENT WHO RISK THEIR LIVES EVERY DAY FOR US!!! THANK YOU! JUST PUT YOURSELF IN MY SHOES.

First if you can not add your name when you critize procedures then to me your opinion doesn't count. You are nothing more than an 'over flow' coward from loraincounty.com. The officers where helping out just like firefighters will help out police when they can. Just like avarge citizens will help out safety forces. I've seen it many times. And as was mentioned, if you weren't there you can not judge on what you see in the picture. Some of you must be real pleasent on mondays after a weekend of sports. Haas

Its funny cause if that officer wouldent have jumped in and helped you people would have said something about that. its just great that the officer was willing to go the extra step to try and save other cars and aparments from being burned. anymore people on here just want to complain about EFD EPD LPD LFD and budget cuts. If your that worried about it go to your local meetings vote do something other than b!tch on here. I think its great how our EMTS FIRE and COPS work together to pull things off

thanks tmc for posting all these good articles the papers dont even get to.

Re: Anonymous 11:41 p.m.
I agree more with the posting following yours. Why shouldn't the police officer have helped? It's ridiculous to think that with him being there, not involved in preventing criminal activity, that he couldn't help pull a hose across a parking lot or assist the fireman in some other way. It seems to me a little elitist or snobbish to say that "PD has no business touching a hose line" when the officer was aiding the firemen.
Let's look at other situations. A police officer and a fireman see an injured person. Do they ignore that person and say "oh, that's a job for Lifecare, not us." Or, a fireman sees a crime occurring. Does he report it or just walk away and say "not my job, that's for the police." Or, a police officer sees a person trapped in a burning building and says "not my responsibility, it's a fire so that's for the fire department." I don't think so in any of these situations. I know they may seem ridiculous, but I'm just using them to try and prove a point.
I think it's excellent for one department to help another out. Why try and draw such a line between them when they are both here for our safety!
So about saying thanks to both the police and fire departments instead of trying to drive a wedge between them. We need them both and we should appreciate them both!

I think the matter of facts here are, when you do have a untrained, and unprotected person helping fight a fire, that person just became a liability. Anything could of happened during the course of putting that fire out. I would rather see the firemen do their job, then visiting a cop in the burn unit at the local burn center. Now what would the arguments be? And that was a nice site to visit, even firemen do stupid stuff!!! www.firefighterclosecalls.com

I have something to say for this. First I commend the firefighters for their effort in controlling this fire, In a as a matter of fact situation this could have been a terrible blast, with much more property loss. It just goes to show no matter what the call is you never know what your heading into. Secondly I want to say more people should support their firefighters and police, they are under staffed ,under paid and still risk their lives everyday for yours.

''Helping the Firefighters was the fact that the Deputy on scene is also a Lorain County Fire Investigator so he was able to jump in and help.''

Would his training as an investigator allow him to be better educated to assist? Not knowing his full background, it is difficult to say if he was a liability or an asset, which an asset is presumed.

People need to step back and take a breath. This Deputy felt that the firemen needed a hand and helped. He did not go rushing into a huge burning building. It was a car fire and he assisted. Stop trying to make it sound like he beat up some small children and kicked a dog.

Thanks to the deputy and officer who helped. If it were my car I would want you there as well.

I support The Lorain County Deputy who took the time to get involved and helped out. He went above and beyond his call of duty.

I also must say Engine 3 did what they had to do. I just have one question: Why is it that they weren't wearing all of their protective gear on this scene?

I'm sure there is something going to be done about that..now that is something worth crying over..leave the Deputies alone!!!

I SUPPORT THEM 100% AND ALWAYS WILL!!

Unfortunate that loraincounty.com has bled over into such a nice news website as TMC. You people complaint just to hear yourselves complaint. If it is not fire, police or the mayor, you will figure out something else to complain about. Go back to loraincounty.com.
