EVER HAD THAT “SINKING FEELING?”

Elyria – The City of Elyria had a HOLE new problem spring up Wednesday afternoon after a semi drove along Gateway Blvd. popping open a sinkhole.

The hole was discovered by neighbors who called the Elyria Police Department around 3:30pm Wednesday to report the hole. The hole itself is a mere 2 feet or so wide, but below is a mini cave about 4 feet deep and 6 feet in width.

Neighbors gathered around the hole as an Elyria Park Ranger inspected the hole and secured the area while they waited for a work crew to arrive. Neighbors said that they have had problems in this area before with water seeping up and pooling. “This was just a matter of time” said one neighbor.

Take a guess, cracked water or sewer line? Neighboring businesses and homeowners - watch out. Had the same thing happen with bricks in a sidewalk in front of a building and the city workers spent 30 minutes flushing dye down the toilets to prove that it was my sewer line, not the storm drain, that was causing the sidewalk to cave in. After telling them multiple times that the sewers ran to the back, not the front, they checked the sewer in the back and guess what? Enough dye to almost glow in the dark. Shows not to use sand as a filler around old storm sewers.
Will be waiting to see what is discovered as the cause of the collapse.
