BUILDING BEGINS TO CRUMBLE
Lorain – Streets surrounding 2029 Pearl Ave in Lorain have been sealed off this morning after Lorain Firefighters responded there for a possible building collapsing.
Lorain Fire received the call of a building collapsing and wires down in the area around 9:30 Monday morning. When Firefighters arrived they found that sections of bricks had fallen from the front of the building and wires had been pulled from the building.
Captain Livchak of the Lorain Fire Department said that at this point it appears that the age of the building and general deterioration is the cause of this mornings incident. “The wires were phone and cable lines so there was no danger there and the electricity to the building had already been turned off. We spoke with the property owner who informed us that the building was constructed in 1890, at this point we feel that the age of the building and just general deterioration is what caused the bricks to come down.”
The bricks around the second floor window were cracking and bowing. Officials from the city Building Department were on the scene with the Fire Department to determine the best way to secure the building. Capt. Livchak said that along with the building owner there was a demolition expert on scene who will be assisting in securing the building.
The scene is still not 100% secure according to Livchak so they have left a crew on scene to oversee the securing process.

Hooorrayyy!!! Maybe the rest of Lorain will start to crumble and fall down next. We can only wish. That city is getting worse and worse with every moment that passes.
Elyria wont be too far behind !
Proud to be from Lorain County.... NOT!
Where are the city officials!! A simple inspection should have caught this thank God no one was hurt this time!! No one give the excuse he has only been in office for 5 months!! Take responsibility and start getting the job done!!!
hahaha anonymous#2 You were right.... Elyria isn't to far behind (Yea I know Rosies is in Elyria Township.. Close enough tho)
I don't know what the City of Lorain's policy is on inspecting the exterior of commercial buildings (on a yearly basis, as complaints are received, when a building permit is requested for changes or additions or what), so I can't really comment on that. However, don't you think the owner of the building should have some responsibility in this matter?? I would think they would check on the condition of the building every so often even if it is vacant (maybe even more so if it is vacant so no unwanted "guests" appear) and may have noticed the bricks pulling away before they fell completely. The City may or may not have some blame here, but they sure don't have all of it.
