TEEN REMAINS IN CRITICAL CONDITION

Elyria – The 13-year-old girl who was struck by the pick up truck in Elyria on East Bridge Tuesday afternoon remains in critical condition at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.

Police have released the name of the girl as Amber Johnson. Johnson was crossing East Bridge under the railroad overpass when she was struck by 46 year old Craig Davis of Wakeman. Johnson was crossing from east to west – she stopped for a moment midway according to witnesses – then darted out to complete the crossing. She was almost across when Davis’ Ford Ranger struck her.

Herb de la Porte, Vice President of LifeCare Ambulance said his Paramedics responded to the call at 2:44 p.m. and were on scene within minutes. de la Porte said that the victim hitting the bridge beam after being struck by the pick up caused serious injuries.

Marc Virant was sitting in his car watching the entire incident. Virant said that he believes that Davis was doing the speed limit and that due to where Johnson jumped out from behind a center beam. He and his friend immediately called 9-1-1 and went to the Johnson’s side to see if they could help. Virant said that at first the girl was quiet but began screaming and thrashing moments later. He described the gashes on her back as being from her hip area up the center of her back.

A visibly shaken Davis said he just didn’t see her in time.

It never fails to amaze me that these young children are allowed to run around busy streets unsupervised. While I do hope that this young girl is ok I hope it shows her parents that she should not be running around by her self especially near busy roads!

My heart goes out to the innocent truck driver who although not at fault must live with the facts for the rest of his life. May God heal his heavy heart and young Amber's injuries. Maybe if we knew where our children were this may have been avoided...........
