TRUCK DRIVES INTO RAVINE
Amherst – A run away dump truck caused a lot of landscaping damage Monday morning – not to worry though, the truck belongs to landscaper Don Moulds Plantation.
Chief Wayne Northeim of the Amherst Fire Department said they received a 9-1-1 call of a truck in a ravine on Stonehedge Way. “The caller also told the 9-1-1 operator that she had not seen anyone get out of the truck or moving around in the truck. When we arrived on scene the Police informed us that nobody was in the truck at the time of the incident.”
The dump truck, loaded with dirt, was parked at a residence on Beech Cliff Drive where they were working. Somehow the truck rolled down a hill at the residence sending it onto Beech Cliff without anyone behind the wheel. The truck then started its run down the street towards Stonehedge. After driving across another yard on Beech Cliff it crossed Stonehedge and rolled through a yard and into a ravine. Once the truck came to rest it was on its side and leaking fuel.
Chief Northeim said that the truck had approximately 10 to 12 gallons of gas in the tank and that 4 to 5 gallons had spilled into the ravine. “We placed a 60 gallon pool under the truck to catch the fuel pouring out. We also went down stream and started to drop booms and pads that are made to soak up the fuel and not the water.” Northeim said a crew was sent even further down stream just to make sure the booms and pads were working – they were. “I spoke with both the Lorain County Office of Emergency Management and the Ohio EPA, explained to both the steps we had taken and they were both satisfied that everything would be ok.”
