FLEA MARKET BUILDING COLLAPSES

BREAKING NEWS
Elyria – A partial building collapse at the Elyria Flea Market in Elyria has South Abbe Road blocked off between Taylor and East Broad Street this morning.

Elyria Firefighters were called to the structure after employees of the VFW spotted the collapse. Dave Tollett said he arrived at the VFW at 6 a.m. and didn’t notice anything wrong at that time. “I parked right here facing the building and didn’t notice it then but it was dark when I got here. Then around 6:30 we were taking the trash out and that is when we saw the damage. I think if it were down when I got here I would have at least heard the water from the sprinkler system, that is pretty loud.”

Elyria Firefighters have had all the utilities shut off; the odor of gas had reached a block away and you could see the water gushing out of the building through the dock doors.

Check back later for more photos and a complete story.

Well, there is always a good side to any trouble. Here, it will very soon be true that virtually everyone in the town and, perhaps, the county, will know what the building is and what goes on inside. Sales should go up!

Nooooooo!!!!!! I really liked going there! Well, hopefully the vendors can SAFELY get all their stuff out before the building has a chance to completely collapse.

The building owner is working to fix the damage, as it is now considered unsafe. Once the Building Inspector determines that the structure is safe, the vendors will be able to get in, assess the damage, clean up and get back in business. That won't be this weekend, but hopefully soon.
