EAST AVE HOUSE FIRE

Elyria – Elyria Firefighters were busy battling a blaze at a home on East Ave. Saturday night. The fire broke out in a second floor bedroom area around 10 P.M. and was spotted by alert neighbors.

Sheri Weller lives next to the home and spotted the fire and smoke coming from the second floor. Weller, along with her daughter, ran to the home and broke a window to get in fearing that their neighbor was trapped inside. Heavy smoke pushed the good Samaritans out of the house.

Assistant Chief Ron Brlas of the Elyria Fire Department said that when they arrived on scene they found smoke and flames coming from a second floor bedroom. “Neighbors were telling us that a man was trapped on the second floor so I had the crew from Rescue 31 enter the home to perform a search for the man. The crew did a room-by-room search of the entire home and did not find anyone. We later learned from the home owners brother that he was out for the evening.”

While the 31 Crew was performing their search Chief Brlas said the Ladder 7 Crew began attacking the fire and were able to knock it down in a short amount of time.

The Elyria Fire Department is investigating the cause of the blaze.
