THE STORM IS HERE

The Snow Storm that has forecasters have been warning us about for the last 24 hours has arrived. The snow began falling in Lorain County around 1:30 this afternoon and hasn’t let up since.

Drivers have been having a difficult time dealing with this year’s first real winter storm as Police go from crash to crash throughout the area. Most of the crashes so far have been non-injury fender benders because people have been driving slower due to the icy roads.

A Lorain County Metro Parks Ranger had to close down Ford Road at the hills leading to the bridge at 3:45 p.m. due to cars getting stuck. One car slide off the road and into a guardrail, the driver said there was nothing he could do to stop the car. “It was like a one mile an hour slide into the rail. The road is a sheet of ice and I am not sure if the city didn’t watch the TV over the last two days but they have been saying this storm was coming so I would like to know why they haven’t hit this area yet?”
Elyria Police shut down the Gulf Road hill by Spring Valley Country Club at 4:20 p.m. after a dozen cars got stuck at the bottom of the hill due to the ice conditions on the hills.

As you make your travel plans for Sunday allow yourself extra time due to the road conditions and the NWS is calling for strong winds that will create blizzard conditions and drifting snow. The WINTER STORM WARNING remains in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday night.

Remember if you are driving and see an accident scene ahead, “SLOW DOWN AND MOVE OVER”. Allow Police, Fire, EMS and Tow Services to do their jobs without becoming a victim.

Let’s be careful out there.

Being the wife of someone who once did this kind of work for a living, please keep this in mind:
Primary roads are cleaned/salted first. These are the roads that have the most traffic therefore the most travelers at risk.
Secondary roads are just that: secondary. They will get to them as soon as it is possible to get to them.
Hills and bridges freeze faster and therefore are more hazardous no matter how many road crews are out there.
These men work sometimes as much as 10-15 hours a day or more during a snow storm to keep the roads clear.
EMS/Fire/Police also work nonstop to assist where their services are needed.
Stay home if you can, slow down if you can't and try to stay safe.. Patsy

This doesn't amaze me anymore. Every year when the snow hits drivers seem to forget how to drive.

The DMV should have yearly refresher courses on navigating in snow and ice and discuss the penalties if caught being a bully driver.

If not yearly then every two years with the emission test. A safe car is only as safe as it's educated driver.

OK, let's talk about primary and secondary. The weather service started talking about this storm on Thursday. It did not start snowing until 1PM on Saturday - and we knew it was going to continue to snow. At 6PM, five hours after the start of the snow, Elyria PD was asking for salt crews on the hills on Gulf Road and West River because cars were stuck at the bottom and could not get up. This is a constant every time it snows in Elyria. I would certainly think that these two routes ARE primary. West River from the mall north was not plowed until 8AM on Monday morning - I know because I was behind the trucks. Lorain's primary streets were wet for the most part at 5AM this morning.

Since Elyria continues to annex and build, I just wonder how much the ratio of plows versus number of streets has changed. I am sure it hasn't gone up. Maybe Lorain and the townships could add to their coffers by giving salt and plow route priority scheduling lessons to Elyria, or at least tell them how to get out earlier.

It's not the plow operator's fault. It's the management that is trying to save a few bucks on OT before making a call out.
