JUMBO BUFFET FIRE

A careless cook at the Royal Buffet on Griswold Road is the cause of a fire that will keep the restaurant closed now for several days.

Elyria Firefighters responded to the restaurant just before 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon after receiving an automatic alarm of a fire in the building. While Firefighters were responding they were able to see the smoke coming from the building, when they arrived on scene they found fire shooting off the roof.

Assistant Chief Ron Brlas of the Elyria Fire Department; “It appears at this time that the fire here started on the stove in some grease, the fire suppression system extinguished that fire but the fire extended up duct work to the roof and that is where you saw a lot of fire and smoke coming from.”
Chief Brlas said that as Firefighters arrived one crew took an inch and three quarter attack line and put the fire out in the kitchen, and then a second crew went to the roof with a line and they tore the roof decking apart and were able to get the fire from up above.

Assistant Chief Robert Dempsey of the Elyria Fire Department Fire Prevention Bureau said that although they have discovered the origin of the fire, there are still questions that need to be answered. “We have learned through our initial investigation that one of the employees had placed a large Wok on the stove with about an inch and a half of oil to heat it up, then walked away and became distracted and didn’t return until the fire had started.” Chief Dempsey said that the fire suppression system did activated and extinguished the fire on the stove but fire had already spread up through the hood ventilation system. “In a previous inspection a couple months ago they were cited for numerous violations including the dirty vents, however, we did receive documentation from a licensed hood service company on October 6th saying that all the violations had been repaired. So what we will be doing tomorrow is meeting with that company at the restaurant to determine what happened here tonight.”

Chief Dempsey said that before the restaurant opens their doors for business again they would have to satisfy Fire Inspectors that the hood ventilation system is in working order. They will also have to pass inspections from the Health Department before opening as well.
