MMMM, MMMM, GOOD!
TMC NEWS: "In The Community"
Eaton Township Fire Department welcomed the community, and several TMC NEWS Gold Card members, into their Firehouse Sunday for their annual Chicken Bar-B-Q.
The event, on all fronts, was a complete success. Once again it was a sell out serving hundreds of chicken dinners and with the Browns playing a lot of dinners were being slung into carry out containers. Guests were able to get a close up look at two of the newest trucks that were recently added to the Fire Department fleet, a new Rescue truck and a new Grass truck.
The real winners were those who chose to dine in at the Firehouse. Each table had bowls filled with various side dishes like coleslaw and potato salad, no spoonful portions found at this diner. Firefighters and other volunteers were tending to guests filling drinks and replacing the side dishes when needed. Then the icing on the cake, so to speak, was the slab of ice cream guests received as they finished their dinners. See, if you had known that they were giving out ice cream you would have stayed!
If you were to peek out behind the Firehouse you would find the truly dedicated members of the department cooking the chickens and suffering from mild cases of heat stroke I think. Their work started at the crack of dawn getting the “pit” ready for the event. Not being a big fan of the heat I asked if they had all drawn short straws and were stuck out back. Each of the “pit workers” said they enjoy it and with it being such a good cause, raising money for the department, they didn’t mind the heat at all. They of course said this in their sweat soaked Fire Department T-shirts.
The leader of all these folks is Chief Phil Slack who was assigned to selling tickets and greeting guests. (In the air conditioned front room) Chief Slack said that he wanted to thank the community for once again supporting the department’s event. He also said that he is proud of his Firefighters and their families who worked so tirelessly in putting on the Bar-B-Q. “We have a great department with great people and we are honored to serve such a great community.”
So mark your calendars people, Sunday October 5th, 2008.
