MAN SETS APARTMENT ON FIRE

Elyria Firefighters responded to Wilkes Villa this afternoon around 3:30 p.m. after a man started a fire in an apartment.

The man was arrested by Elyria Police who were in the complex on their way to the apartment after receiving a complaint about the man. Officers arrived at the apartment as the man was setting a fire on the second floor of the apartment. Police took the man into custody then had LifeCare Paramedics transport him to Elyria Memorial for injuries he received in the fire.

Elyria Fire Department Assistant Chief Ron Brlas said that there was extensive fire in the second floor bedroom when they arrived. Although the fire was knocked down fairly quickly there was still approximately $12,000 dollars in damage to the apartment and contents. Chief Brlas also said that Firefighters discovered several containers of lighter fluid, “It is unknown if those containers were there previous to the gentleman entering the apartment or if he carried them in with this intent. The investigation is under way and we should know more soon. Right now residents from apartments 103 and 105 are being sheltered tonight by the Red Cross.”
