AIR QUALITY ADVISORY
Forecasted to be “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” Due to High Levels of Fine Particle Air Pollution
Lorain County - An Air Quality Advisory has been issued by NOACA for Monday, August 6, 2007, based on the predicted levels of fine particle air pollution in the region. Fine particle pollution is often linked to the amount of moisture in the air, providing water molecules on which pollutants can “hitch a ride.” Monday is predicted to be hot and hazy. A frontal boundary to the south of the region will shift back north as a warm front Sunday, bringing a warm and very humid air mass into the area. A southwesterly flow throughout the day Monday will allow transport of additional moisture and pollutants into the area, keeping fine particle concentrations high. A slight possibility of showers exists for Monday, which may aid in dispersal of particulates. However, high humidity and patchy haze will drive the fine particle concentrations into the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” range on Monday, according to NOACA and its contractor, Ohio University.
What Can You Do To Protect Your Health?
If you are in a “Sensitive Group,” meaning children, the elderly, and those with cardiopulmonary conditions or diseases such as asthma, please don’t exert yourself on Monday and consider staying indoors.
What Can You Do To Improve the Air Quality in Northeast Ohio?
Don’t idle your car engine! Idling wastes fuel and it pollutes the air. In addition, please consider carpooling, mass transit, and trip combining.
The Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA) is a transportation and environmental planning agency. Assisted by its partners, the USEPA, the Ohio EPA, the Cleveland Division of Air Quality, the Lake County General Health District, the Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study, the Akron Regional Air Quality Management District, Ohio University, and the National Weather Service. NOACA forecasts levels of ozone and fine particles for the Northeast Ohio region.
