GARAGE FIRE ON SPRUCE – 15 CHICKENS SURVIVE

Elyria – A fire destroyed a Spruce Street garage in Elyria Monday night but 15 chickens survived the blaze.

Assistant Chief Tim Mitchell of the Elyria Fire Department said the garage was fully involved when Firefighters arrived just after 10pm Monday. Several small explosions could be heard from blocks away as Firefighters battled the blaze and also worked to drench the rear of the house as the heat had already begin to melt the siding.

Even though the small barn that sat against the garage filled with smoke and had some fire damage on the outside, all of the 15 chickens housed inside survived the ordeal according to Mitchell.

The fire was knocked down within 20 minutes. The garage was a total loss.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
