TMC NEWS POLL

THE MAC ATTACK
In today’s poll we take a look at the Elyria Design Review Committee and a new restaurant in downtown.

The owners of Krazy Mac’s have been working to get their restaurant opened at the corner of Broad & Cedar for the last several months. Yesterday they hit a little snag – their new $1,500 sign does not sit well with the city’s Design Review Committee.

The owners were first visited Monday by a city building inspector informing them of the sign issue – then the city’s economic development Director stopped by later in the day to mention the violation again.

The violation: It is a white illuminated sign.

Now the business owner and the designer of the sign are set to meet with the design review committee next week in an attempt to work through the issues.

What is your take on this issue? Do you agree with the city Design Review Committee – does the sign harm the downtown historic districts look & feel or do you side with the owners of Krazy Mac’s and feel the sign has been professional designed and should remain? VOTE NOW!

My concern is that the owner did not approach the city first to determine what is acceptable in terms of a sign.

A LARGE part lies on the owner in this example.

Don't we Think the city has BIGGER ISSUES to address?

I can appreciate the fact that the business owner and the sign maker had an obligation to know the rules of the city.

I also understand that the city could have done a better job of letting people know that the sign requirements in Elyria are different from other cities in the area.

The issue here is bigger than the sign. The problem is the failure on the part of the city of Elyria to provide an environment that welcomes business.

If you are looking at communities to place your business would you choose a place that puts onerous burdens on you before you even open the doors?

In troubled times a city needs to be an incubator for small business.

In the end their success translates into an economic stimulus for the city.

Every time a business is alienated there is an impact. It's very small and hardly noticeable. But trust me when I say that you will die from a million little cuts as surely as you will from one big one.

Yes, there are bigger issues. However, those were once small issues (like this) that people let keep going until it became a bigger issue.

What is it that the City has a problem with? The base of the sign was there already and the new owner just had the sign insert put in. It is the owner’s business logo just like the Toy Bar has a logo and the rest of the signs in this town. Is it not encouraging colors or made out of encouraging materials that the Mayor wants in this town.

Does any one really see a problem with the sign?

I am sick and tired of Grace and his henchmen with their Design Review. Does Design Review have it's place? Yes. Does it have to be with the Gestapo mentality employed in this town? NO!! There is nothing wrong with that sign. No wonder this city is becoming a ghost town.
