PATROL REPORTS 9 FATALITIES

Columbus - The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported nine fatalities this Fourth of July holiday weekend with 67 percent being OVI-related. Over the 3 ¼ day reporting period, State Troopers arrested 692 impaired drivers and assisted 4,819 motorists.

Last year during the holiday reporting period of 1 ¼ days, 10 people were killed on Ohio roads, with six being OVI-related. State troopers arrested 294 impaired drivers, and assisted 3,332 motorists.

The following Ohio traffic statistics are for the holiday weekend period of July 3 at 6 p.m. through July 6 at midnight.

Of the Holiday Weekend Fatal Crashes
3 were on State and Federal Highways with 3 Fatalities and 3 Injured
5 on County Roads with 5 Fatalities and 1 Injury
1 was on a City Street with 1 Fatality

With Safety Belts Installed but Not Used 2 were killed
With Safety Belts Used 2 were killed

Alcohol was in use in 3 of the crashes; not in use in 3 and the remaining 3 is unknown

1 Pedestrian was killed

4 Fatalities were on Motorcycle

In addition to this year’s traffic enforcement efforts, the Patrol had 32 felony arrests, 127 drug violations and seized five weapons statewide.
