As Dawson approached the intersection of Oster Road, the entrance to the Ford Plant, he struck a Ford Focus driven by 29-year-old Leah Toney of Sheffield Lake.
The collision sent Toney, who had been sitting at a red light, across two lanes and off the left side of the road. Meanwhile Dawson continued northbound while going off the right side of the road where he took down a street sign before returning to the road and coming to a stop several hundred feet away from the initial crash.
Sheffield Village Firefighters treated Toney and Dawson at the scene and with mutual aid assistance from Sheffield Lake Firefighters transported both patients to local hospitals.
Toney was reported to have minor injuries.
Palmer said that Dawson was having diabetic issues and had told him that he was heading to a McDonalds. He told Palmer that he did not remember anything about the crash.
Captain BJ Huge of the Sheffield Village Fire Department said that is consistent with what happens when a diabetic’s blood sugar level starts to drop.
Palmer said that Dawson has not been charged yet with the collision and that if it is proven that he was having a diabetic emergency at the time of the crash that he would likely not receive a ticket.
Sheffield Village Police Department continues to investigate the crash.
