ARE YOU PREPARED?

Columbus – The Ohio State Highway Patrol is urging motorists to make safety their first priority while driving in inclement weather.

The Patrol is offering the following tips to assist motorists with winter driving:
· Allow extra time to get to your destination.
· Maintain a safe distance between your vehicle and traffic ahead.
· Pay attention to the roadways and weather conditions, as they can change rapidly.
· Always pay close attention to bridges and overpasses, as they are often the first to freeze over.
· If you do slide off the side of the road, stay with your vehicle and call the patrol at 1-877-7-PATROL.
· If you get stuck in snow, make sure that your tail pipe is free of all snow and debris, to decrease your chance of carbon monoxide poisoning.

The Patrol recommends that in the event of a vehicle breakdown, turn on hazard warning lights, safely position the vehicle as far off the road as possible and open the hood. Place a "help" sign in the rear window, and stay inside the vehicle until help arrives. If a cell phone is available, dial 1-877-7-PATROL for assistance and the call will be directed to the nearest Patrol post.

Troopers suggest all motorists have the following items in their vehicle in case of a breakdown:

· Cell phone
· Road flares or reflectors
· Help or Call Police signs
· First aid kit
· Flashlight
· Blanket/Sleeping bag
· Small shovel
· Bottled water and energy foods
· Candles and matches
· Tow strap/chain

Up-to-the-minute road conditions are always available by logging onto the Ohio Department of Transportation's (ODOT) Web site, www.buckeyetraffic.org, which received more than 117 million hits during last year's winter driving season.
ODOT also reminds motorists: Ice and Snow...Take It Slow.

people don't prepare at home for an emergency - why would they do it for their car?

I don't have any of that stuff. But I will tell you what I do have... eleven green reflective vests in my car. I'm sure if I get stuck somewhere I can use the neon to send out an SOS that would be visible on the moon.

Well in recent comments about the reflective vest, i have just one thing to say, They served their purpose if drivers saw them while driving past accident scenes.
for the anonymous message posted on 1:12 why dont you get a tattoo or a medical band that says, "please EMS crews dont do your job and send lifeflight" my injuries arent worth the money so that i may see my family again.. Be grateful you bastard that there are people out there that are willing to risk their lives and put those vests on to make sure you keep yours...

P.s you will need me and the other people in ems, law, and fire before we need your services.

Terry i hope you post this message because it speaks to the rest of the public that we serve.

Life of an EMT/Cop/Firefighter

It may take you two minutes to read this, but if you do not take the time to read this you are one of the people this post is talking about.

You stay up for 16 hours.

he's been up for 48 straight.
_________________________

You take a warm shower to help you wake up.

The rain in the middle of the interstate keeps him awake.
__________________________

You complain of a "headache", and call in sick.

he's chilled to the bone, hasnt eaten all day, has the flu, and then runs into a burning building.
__________________________

You drink your coffee on your way to the mall.

he pumps on a five years olds chest on the way to the hospital.
__________________________

You make sure you're cell phone is in your pocket.

he makes sure the pass device on his pack is working.
__________________________

You talk trash about your "buddies" that aren't with you.

he watches her buddy fall through four floors.
__________________________

You walk down the beach, staring at all the pretty girls.

He walks down the highway looking for the motorcyclist's missing limb.
_________________________

You complain about how hot it is.

he wears fifty pounds of gear in the middle of July and drags a body out of 1600 degree flames.
__________________________

You go out to lunch, and complain because the restaurant got your order wrong.

he hasnt seen a meal since last shift ate breakfast.
__________________________

Your maid makes your bed and washes your clothes.

he's worn the same stinking, wet, grungy clothes for the past 24 hours....no time for a shower.
__________________________

You go to the mall and get your hair redone.

He holds the hair of some college girl while shes puking in the back of the ambulance.
__________________________

You're angry because your class ran 5 minutes over.

His shift ended 2 hours ago and she's on for another 24 hours at a station thirty miles away.
__________________________

You call your girlfriend and set a date for tonight.

He calls his girlfriend to tell her he made it back alive....then leaves abrubtly for another fire.
__________________________

You yell and scream at the engine that just past you beacuse they slowed you down.

He's in the back of the engine, going to cut somebody out of their car only to find out that their dead and their daughter is barely alive.
__________________________

You roll your eyes as a baby cries.

He cries as he hears his new born cry in the hospital....but he was taking a drunk teenager in when his boy was born.
__________________________

You criticize your fire dept and say they're never there quick enough anyway.

He blows the air horn while the person in front of them refuses to move while talking on their cell phone and doing their makeup.
__________________________

You hear the jokes about fallen firefighters and say they should have known better.

He feels the floor give way while he's carrying an old lady from her bedroom and tosses her on to the hard floor and falls into the unknown.
__________________________

You see the bright lights when you go by.

He sees the broken bodies lying around the car.
__________________________

You are asked to go to the store by your parents. You don't.

He looks into buying a bullet proof vest because he's been shot at trying to save the shooting victims life.
__________________________

You stay at home and watch TV.

He takes his spare time to wash the wagon, restock the ambulance and maybe call his mother to tell her not to worry, he'll be home the next night.
__________________________

You crawl into your soft bed, with down pillows, and get comfortable.

He tries to sleep on his spring board bed but keeps getting woken up by the gong and bell, ahh, one hour of sleep, it should due till tommorow night.
__________________________

You sit there and judge him, saying the that it's a waste of money to have them around.

Garbage truck workers make more than she does, but it's not for the money, it's for the people who don't appreciate what he does.

Wow, that's not my life at all. I get the point you are trying to make, but it's a CHOSEN profession. And it's JUST a job. If it bothers you that you don't have time to call your girlfriend, mom, or best friend from third grade math class... maybe you should look into a different career. I agree public safety is sometimes stressfull but REALLY?? all that?

Also I'd rather risk my life by not wearing the vest on a call.
