DRIVER RUNS STOP SIGN

CAUSES CRASH – 4 INJURED
Elyria Township – A driver blowing a stop sign was the cause of a two car crash in Elyria Township Wednesday afternoon – sending 4 people to the hospital.

Tammy Lee lives at the corner of Rosewood & Ethel and said that although the speed limit is 25MPH she estimates that 90% of the vehicles traveling through her neighborhood exceed the limit. “People will fly through here because it is a straight shot even though there are kids all through this neighborhood.”

Lee was in her yard Wednesday afternoon when she heard a car’s engine coming closer. “I looked over and saw the white car coming west on Rosewood towards Ethel at a high rate of speed – the driver never slowed down at the stop sign and as she crossed the intersection a truck crashed into her.”

The truck was traveling south on Ethel at the time of the crash and did not have a stop sign.
Lee said the crash ended up in her front yard near where her young son usually puts his lemonade stand. “I ran towards the cars after the crash and two girls in the white car were climbing out through the windows – the car was smoking really bad.”

Elyria Township Firefighters treated and transported the two girls from the car, while Sheffield Township Firefighters treated and transported two young children that were riding in the truck.

Lee said that her and other neighbors have been trying to get the township to do something about the traffic through their neighborhood – they say that although this was very unfortunate what happened today maybe this will make the issue a higher priority for the township.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

thats crazy. I mean stop signs are there for a reason. Hopefully everyone is doing ok. They need to figure out something else for that intersection.

When I drive through the west and southwest suburbs of Cleveland, people seem to observe the speed limits. And rarely does anyone tailgate me.

But as soon as I drive back into Lorain County, that tailgater is right there on my tail.

I don't understand this. Can anyone explain why Lorain County drivers are more aggressive?

Lorain county drivers are always in a hurry because they need to make to the unemployment office before it closes or their banks to make a house payment before they get foreclosed on!

I wonder what played a factor in their running the stop sign. Also, not exactly sure how fast a "high rate of speed" is, but this is not a blind intersection (i.e. traffic obscurred by trees, large shrubs, structures, etc.), and it's a little hard to miss a large red pick-up truck. Seems like they should have seen the truck coming and slammed on the brakes to avoid the crash if they were paying any sort of attention to the road.
Anonymous, I wouldn't necessarily say that Lorain County drivers are more aggressive, but I do think common sense is not as common as it should be. A lot of the accidents we see here are people not paying attention, yakking on the cell phone, or whatever instead of seeing what's going on around them. Like the old saying goes "look out for the other guy" and hopefully see him because he may not see you.

Elyria township needs to make that intersection a 4-way stop. The neighborhood has alot more people living it than it did 10 years ago-there have been so many new homes built, which is great. However, the roads are too narrow for the ammount of daily traffic- especially Ethel. The water lines are constantly breaking because they cant support the growth. They are collecting more tax dollars from the growth & permits etc but are not providing improvements to the residents.

Also, there is no stop sign at Birchwood & Ethel- so if this would have happened there, who would have been at fault?

I would like to comment on behalf of 4 out of 5 victims of this accident, who are family members. My younger sister was driving the red pick up truck that crashed into the white car in which our cousin was the passenger. Her friend who was driving missed the stop sign and my sister slammed on her brakes, trying to avoid hitting the car. The driver, after hearing my cousin scream, slammed on her breaks also. This can happen ANYWHERE and to ANYONE!! Let's not start pointing fingers. Things like this happen everyday-everywhere! It was sad this had to happen to 5 people under the age of 18, but maybe this will teach kids to pay attention.

Whitney - so sorry to hear about your family and the accident. I know this must be very difficult for you and your family to go through and I hope everyone is ok. Unfortunely, this could of happened anywhere Lorain, Elyria or even Cleveland the city has nothing to do with it nor does unemployment or the bank. It's sad to see how people can be so unsympathetic, these are probably the same people who have issues with road rage!!!! Anyway good luck to all involved and again I'm sorry this happened and I hope everyone is doing well especially that adorable little boy. God bless you all!!!!!!!1

Whitney-so sorry to hear that your family was involved in that accident. I certainly hope everyone is ok. I'm also sorry that so many people have to be so unsympathetic. This accident has nothing to do with the unemployment office, or the bank, Lorain, Elyria or Cleveland for that matter. This could of happened anywhere and to anyone. What about the crazy people with road rage... Anyway I just wanted to say I hope everyone is well and ok especially that adorable little boy. God bless you all..........

Whitney, I hope all of your relatives and friends make a speedy recovery.

I hope you can keep us posted and can get further information from the driver of the white car as to how and why they missed that stop sign. Perhaps we all can learn from this and cause everyone to be more aware of these things.

Also, was it purely by chance that the two friends crossed paths like this at the intersection? Wow, what are the chances of something like this happening between two friends?

James if the driver was 18 then there is no law about having minors in the car. Hello, age 18 is consider a legal adult.

first of all! you cant use stop signs to control speed only trafic. STATE LAW!!! elyria twp does not collect any tax dollars from the residential growth in that area. next! the water lines are old and owned by the county, that makes them the counties problem not the townships. so call the county and see how far you get with them!
