PLANE FLYING LOWER THAN NORMAL
PORT CLINTON – The Ohio State Highway Patrol is releasing the names of the four victims killed in the plane crash Saturday in Ottawa County.
The recently purchased 1972 Cessna 340 aircraft, crashed into the backyard of a home located on Port Clinton Eastern Road, west of State Route 269, in Danbury Township at approximately 12:41 p.m. Saturday. The plane was on approach to land at the Erie-Ottawa Regional Airport.
Those killed were, pilot, David P. Eckstein, 67, and passengers; John D. McCarter, 68, and Karen S. Soprano, 62, all of Mansfield, Ohio, and Janet M. Hanna, 66, of Shelby, Ohio. All were pronounced dead at the scene.
A Federal Aviation Administration investigator witnessed the crash and noted the aircraft was flying lower than normal and at a speed lower than normal for pattern altitude. Erie-Ottawa Regional Airport noted no distress call was made.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were notified. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and the Ottawa County Coroner assisted on-scene.
