AVON LAKE SOLDIER CRITICALLY INJURED

Photo Courtsey of NewsChannel 5

The father of Soldier Colin Smith, a 2005 graduate of Avon Lake, reported today that his son was injured while fighting in Iraq and is listed as brain dead on life support in Germany. It is still unkknown what happened, details are slowly coming in.

Grief counselors were on hand at Avon Lake High School to help the students and faculty who were dealing with the news. Students first thought that Smith had died so they began building a memorial but quickly took it down when they got the official word from the family.

Friends say that one Smith's goals was to be in the military and to serve his country, that is where he wanted to be

How sad!!! I would like to offer my condolences to his family, his friends, and his community. I certainly hope everyone in Lorain County thinks of this individual when they go next week to the polls. It's time to fire everyone by voting all incumbants out of office who have allowed our country to get into a situation like this. I wonder how many more men and women will have to die in Iraq before we can bring our brave troops home. I wonder how many children have been orphaned by this war, and I would debate anyone on how much safer our world is...............................

politics again. but I digress. my thoughts and prayers go out to this family as well. I am tired of watching the toll our country takes as we watch members of our community fall in combat. beyond the elections and polls and beyond the news and hype. may we all remember the men and women who have missed thnksgivings and christmas since the first wars of our world to the ones in trenches today. our freedom and the opportunity for us to breathe a breath of air not poluted with smoke off mortars or burning plains of war fields, these things were afforded to us by the blood sweat and tears of soldiers like these. we may not be safer now than whenever but we are not living our lives running scared of what will blow up next. my heart and soul can only be thankful for such gifts. thank you Colin and the company of those who serve alongside you as well.

Amen to both of these comments. Without these dedicated and committed men and women who do what they are asked to do regardless of the consequences for themselves, their families or their friends, represent true heroes in our society.
May we all stop and say a prayer today for Colin, his family, his friends, his community and his nation. May we also all stop and say a prayer that soon all of our men and women who used to be boys and girls will no longer have to fight and come home in peace.

My sincere condolences to the family. My son is a Seabee in the navy and due to deploy to Kuwait in Feb. (he picked one of the few jobs in the navy that will not put him on a ship...) He is mobile construction, and will be on convoys and work details....I do not support the war, but I do support our children who are over there and pray for their safe return! http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y35/TraumaMamma/Seabee/100_1680.jpg

Wow... Way to go. Use the death of an American soldier to push your political agenda. Anybody can make an informed opinion, and vote for or against the politicians as they see fit. Some times you just have to shake your head and breath a heavy sigh and just feel bad for other people. Sometimes you need to just shut your big mouth and keep your opinions to yourself. Save your opinion for the bar or when your hanging with your friends. Don't latch onto a tragedy to prove how damn smart you think you are.
