APARTMENT FIRE UPDATE

This video provided to TMC NEWS by Gage Hume

TMC NEWS talked with Elyria Fire Assistant Chief Ron Brlas about yesterday’s fire on 4th Street.

TMC NEWS: What did you find when you pulled up on scene?

Chief Brlas: Upon arrival, we had the entire rear of the structure fully involved with fire. The fire was working its way from the rear porch towards the front of the building. Our Engine 1 crew made an initial attack with a 2 1/2" line from the exterior, then made an interior attack with a 1 3/4" line.

TMC NEWS: I understand there was something about this building that made fighting the fire tricky.

Chief Brlas: There was a center dividing wall that ran the length of the building that made fighting the fire difficult. Positioning crews was difficult due to this wall and the heavy heat and smoke conditions.

TMC NEWS: Everybody got out ok?

Chief Brlas: A crew searched the building to make sure all occupants were out. Three residents were found in a first floor apartment and were removed unharmed.

Brlas said that Elyria Fire received assistance from Lorain Fire at the scene while Avon Fire manned our station while we were involved with the fire.

The damage estimate for the fire is $200,000.

YouTube rocks. Okay, my heart goes out to the family and I hope everyone is okay. Blah, blah and so on. BUT, is it bad that while watching, the little voice in my head is screaming "BURN BABY BURN!!" Fire is sweet. But dangerous. Don't play with matches.

Ummmm, that first post was disturbing. You should seek help Jason, right away.

As far as this fire goes, I'm sure the residents of Elyria feel safer knowing that EFD called Lorain Fire for help to the scene. Nothing against Lorain, they like to play too. But how many other Fire Departments did Lorain Fire pass that were much closer, but unutilized? I fear for the day when a city resident receives the deed to city hall as a lawsuit award for EFD's poor use of resources involved in the death of a citizen. A truck with 4 men is a truck with 4 men.

Disturbing. Maybe. But at least it was to the point. I started reading your comment but by the middle all I saw was blah blah blah. As a bonafide pyro you just do not get it. Fire is pretty. Want to pet it? Ok. Maybe a bit disturbing.

Finally. Someone who knows what they are talking about. Aye aye cap'n. I knew about that box thing (is that similar to Al Gore's lock box?) anywho. I leave the facts to the pros. I am just color commentator. Well 1/2 color I guess. (inside joke)

Hey anonymous!!! YOU are right. There are several Fire Depts. within reach of Elyria that get passed by. But Union is Union so I hear?. Along with past hurt feelings because EFD wasn't invited to close fires themselves. There is a Fire house On Griswold Rd. that EFD never calls. And I'm sure they can be in the "city" just as fast as the full timers...

Continuing.....EFD plays "call-in" of their own off duty firefighters on the "BIG ONES". Which in reality looks like a Volunteer Fire Co. coming together. So I'm thinking, the outside Volunteer Depts. Can muster just as fast as the City could!?
