COMMENTARY: GOING OUT OF BUSINESS OR NOT?

COMMENTARY: We have all seen the signs on the side of the road and plastered on buildings, GOING OUT OF BUSINESS, FINAL DAYS, EVERYTHING MUST GO. A local furniture store on Griswold Road is one of these businesses that spent a lot of money on signs and promotions telling us that they were going out of business months ago. Then came their signs saying final days. I often wondered after seeing the final days signs a month later how many final days they were talking about. Today we happened to notice that the store has taken down all the going out of business and final days signs and replaced it with a sign that says "just arrived, new recliners". Why is you are going out of business and in your final days would you need to order new recliners. We believe that if Kaplan Furniture ever, God forbid, decided to close up their shop that they would do it with class, dignity and honor. Maybe the owners of this Groswold Road store should talk to Rich Kaplan, maybe he can teach them how to be a respectable business. Oh wait, they are going out of business so no need for the chat. Or is there? Tell us what you think.

There was a furniture store in Lorain that did the samething. I think they went out of business twice with the same SCAM. I think people should boycott this store and send them a letter telling them to read their own signs and go out of business.

ditto with anonymous, I have been in that store (J&M) and they give you a song and dance about how they were closing, then they changed their name and reopened and now they are just looking for a new location. Basically their going out of business sale made them enough money to stay afloat and then bankrupting cancelled their debts. Thanks to us, right. They'll close soon. Good Riddance

Maybe this is something that the prosecutors office should look into? Does anyone know is they have? It seems like a type of fraud to me.

Maybe sales were so good from the going out of business sale that they were able to reopen and afford some well deserved new recliners. I think this is convenient and definitely like the idea of being notified way ahead of time before a store actually goes out of business. There is a furniture store on Oberlin Ave that has been going out of business for a while. I’ve been meaning to check the place out for a few months but never get around to doing it. So I applaud these places that spend a long time going out of business they make life a lot easier on me the procrastinator. Unlike other places that say they are going out of business and two weeks later go out of business. What kind of crap is that?

You need to get the story straight... The store on Griswold road was going out of business. The owners were retiring and moving away. They contracted with a company that specializes in liqiudating store assets. Unfortunately, the company who was hired to closeout the store was actually a scam artist in his own right. He had fine-print in the contract which forced the owner to continue with the closeout or be sued. The store owners lost nearly everything they had. After it was over, the owners(now the owners children) had to re-open the store to keep from filing bancruptcy. There was never any funny business going on... they are just trying to keep their heads above water. By boycotting the store you will be hurting some of the nicest people in Elyria. It's not their fault they got scammed. I'd love to see a followup story with the correct info instead of just reading the original commentary.

How do you know that you have the facts right? The way I look at it is, if the owners were stupid enough to hire an outside firm without doing a backhround check on them then they deserve what they get for allowing a sam artist to prey on the people in this community? If these people perpetrate a scam on our community and the owners are so upset about it and are suce nice people - will they make everything right with the people that were scammed by the firm they hired? Facts are facts, signs were up for a long long time saying going out of business and final days like was stated in the tmc news commentary. I know when I would see them on the roadside I would laugh about it. The signs and the store became a joke. I went back and read the original commentary and the other readers opinions and i could not see where anyone called for a botcott. Even though I would never step foot in that store again. Maybe it is you who should get your facts straight and apologize.

Mary and Joe don’t have any kids. Their adopted daughter is only 18
and she does not even work at the store. Furthermore they were not moving either the bank has a lien on their house so they can’t move or sell their house.
Their plan last July was to close for good. And finally they are not the nicest people in Elyria not
nearly. Boycotting may finally force them to decide to stay move or close already.
Nicest people in Elyria?
Old saying goes you are who you roll with. Remember the guy from Elyria who stole millions of
dollars from church people. The owners are good friends with them and I know his house was furnished with J&M stuff. In fact the guys daughter works at J&M. Nice people.

If scamming us into beleiving they were going out of biz wasn't bad enough; they are also racist and eat babies.

What's the big deal? They are just selling furniture... If I had a store like that I'd try to scam everyone out of every cent too. It's the American way. Relax it's not like they are molesting children or anything. My solution is buy furniture from them or whereever you want to and if that doesn't make you happy then steal furniture from child molesters. But seriously stop fighting about it in the commentary section of this fine fine website. Constructive critism only. But that's just my opinion.
