SANDUSKY OFFICER KILLED

Sandusky – A press conference in Sandusky began with a moment of silence this morning as Erie County Sheriff Terry M. Lyons announced the In the Line of Duty death of Sandusky Police Officer Andrew Dunn.

According to Sheriff Lyons Officer Dunn made contact with 50 year old Kevin J. Randleman who was riding a bike on a side street at 3:01 a.m. Lyons said there was an exchange of gunfire between the two with Officer Dunn receiving multiple gunshot wounds. Sandusky Firefighters treated Dunn at the scene before transporting him to Firelands Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:33 a.m.

Randleman received one gunshot wound and was also treated by Firefighters before being transported to Firelands. He was then flown by Toledo LifeFlight to the University of Toledo Hospital where he is receiving further treatment.

Chief Jim Lang of the Sandusky Police Department said that Officer Dunn was a 3 year veteran of the Department having been hired in March of 2008 and described him as a “fine young man.”

Dunn was married with 2 young children; Lang said one is only 5 months old. Dunn’s father according to Lang has also been a member of the Sandusky Police force for over 20 years.

Chief Lang said that this is a “very sad day in the city.”

Authorities would not release any additional information other than to say the stop of Randleman was self initiated by Dunn and that the Department has had contact with Randleman in the past.
