MAN KILLED TRYING TO BEAT TRAIN

Lorain – A man walking with his brother along the railroad tracks near the Frank Nardini Overpass in Lorain was killed as he tried to cross the tracks before the train passed. George Smith, 53 of Lorain, didn’t make it – a Norfolk Southern train struck him just before 5pm Saturday afternoon. Smith was thrown more than 50 feet after being hit by the train.

Smith’s brother, 55-year-old William Smith, told Police that they were walking north when they approached the tracks. Smith said his brother was convinced that he could make it across before the train passed; he only made it half way before being struck.

Witnesses who were in the area spoke with police and cooberated Smith’s story. They say the train was traveling about 35MPH and blowing the train’s whistle before striking Smith.

The Smith family now has to deal with another death – just four months ago Smith’s brother Eugene Smith died in a fire while sleeping in his make shift apartment inside of the old Safe & Reliable Cab stand on East 28th Street.
