SADDAM TO HANG WITHIN 30 DAYS
Saddam Hussein received a late Christmas present from Iraq’s highest appeals court Tuesday when they upheld his death sentence, saying he must be hanged within 30 days. Chief Judge Aref Shahin said the sentence “must be implemented within 30 days. From tomorrow, any day could be the day of implementation.”
When asked for a response to the news the White House had this to say: Today marks an important milestone in the Iraqi people's efforts to replace the rule of a tyrant with the rule of law, and the Iraqis deserve praise for continuing to utilize the institutions of democracy to pursue justice. Saddam Hussein has received due process and legal rights that he denied the Iraqi people for so long. So this is an important day for the Iraqi people.
Saddam was sentenced on November 5 to hang for ordering the 1982 killing of 148 Shiites in the central city of Dujail following an attempt on his life.
