OFFICERS PREVENT SUICIDE ATTEMPT

Elyria – Police in Elyria responded to a Fairlawn Ave home after receiving word that a man was attempting to hang himself in a garage.

The man’s brother informed police just after 10 p.m. that his brother told him that he was in the garage and was presently in the process of hanging himself.

When Officers Sword and Merrill arrived at the home they found the front door open. Officer’s attempted to knock several times but nobody answered. Officer’s then announced their presence “Elyria Police” and entered the home.Officer Merrill observed the garage lights to be on and the Officers approachedthe unattached garage through the side entrance man door. Officers were able to hear loud music coming from the garage and could vaguely hear a males voice making inaudible noises.
Officer Merrill was able to observe through the hinge area of the doorway that the male had a green colored extension cord wrapped around his neck and appeared to be in the process of hanging himself.Officer’s entered the garage and Officer Sword grabbed the victim by thelegs and lifted him into the air as Officer Merrill removed the extensioncord from his neck. After securing him, he began to yell “Why are you guy’sdoing this, my wife is leaving me, I don’t want to live anymore.”

The man appeared highly intoxicated and indicated several times that this was his third attempt at killing himself. Officer’s immediately requested LifeCareand victim was transported to Elyria Memorial Hospital for an evaluation and was “pink slipped” by Officer Merrill.Police say that the extension cord was contained in a harness type hookup attached to a support beam that ran across the top of the garage and victim was on a step stool just prior to Officer’s arrival.
