CALLING ALL GREEN THUMBS

It’s that time of year again – time to get out into the yard and begin the task of out doing your neighbors on having the best-dressed yard on the block.

As you make plans to visit local nurseries and green houses, don’t forget Thome Farms on Route 58 in South Amherst.

Starting their 19th season Roberta Thome said customers will have a wide selection to chose from. “We carry annual bedding flats, hanging baskets – we mix up all the combinations and grow them right here. We also carry a lot of perennials and one gallon containers.”

Thome and her husband Jerry started the greenhouse 19 years ago and aside from a short move down the road they have always been located on Route 58. “His family was in this business on a very small scale because they had a farm in the Avon area and having his own greenhouse is something Jerry always wanted to do – so right after we got married we opened.”

Thome Farms, like many other locally owned – independent businesses, participate in many community events in an attempt to give back. TMC NEWS covered an event at Thome Farms back in November of 2007 when the Thome family opened up their property to a local Cub Scout group to launch pumpkins. Thome said that they try to help out local groups whenever they can and that they were thrilled to allow the Scouts have their program on their site and said it was a lot of fun watching them launch the pumpkins.
