CAR COLLIDES WITH TRAIN

Lawrence Gornall of Lorain was parked near the train tracks this morning trying to capture a newly painted caboose on video when the train he was taping collided with a car at the Huron Street crossing in Elyria.

“I was taping a northbound CSX freight train and as it passed by I swung the camera around and saw the car sitting kind of funny at the crossing and noticed it had been hit by the train.”

Gornall said that the conductor told him that the driver of the vehicle had struck one of the engines as it passed through the crossing. Although there was smoke inside the vehicle from the airbags Gornall said the man was speaking to him and felt that he was ok. Elyria Firefighters and LifeCare Paramedics treated the 80 year old driver before transporting him to Elyria Memorial Hospital. He was later flown to Metro Health Medical Center in Cleveland.

Elyria Police Department is investigating the crash.
