READER QUESTIONS USE OF WORD

To whom it may concern, I have really enjoyed your web site since I found out about it from my brother-in-law some 6 months ago. My wife & I feel connected to our "home" even though we cannot be there at this time. That being said I would like to take exception to the way that you referred to the folks that throw there litter on the ground rather than in the supplied trash containers. You referred to them as PIGS. Whether this is true or not is not a "news item" - to report the problem is the right thing to do but it is also your responsibility to do so in a professional manner. There are other ways to refer to folks that do not have the common decency to use public trash containers. You have always kept to the high road and have always written in a professional manner and I would encourage you to continue to do so. Lorain County does not have a fair and accurate electronic news media source except for your voice.

Thank you for the great work that you are doing for the citizenship of Lorain County both near and far.

Stephen Smith

First, we would like to thank Mr. Smith and his family for reading TMC NEWS and we certainly hope that they continue to be loyal readers. I would like to explain a couple things about why the word was used. Personally I have been in downtown Elyria for about 20 years. I have seen the downtown go through many changes and I have seen just as many businesses open and close. Mayor Grace has made downtown a special project of his to make it the center point for the city, a showcase if you will. Although many of the cosmetic changes have been nice, they still haven’t resolved the parking issues, the traffic issues or the lack of retail that will help bring people downtown. Since Bob Waters has taken over the Greystone Barber shop, now The Barber’s Blend, he has worked extremely hard to beautify his storefront and the surrounding area. What did he get for his hard work, headaches from the city of Elyria complaining about him decorating the island in front of his store. When I saw Mr. Waters out front of his shop Sunday afternoon with his leave blower and rake clearing the sidewalks and gutter area of the leaves it sickened me to see the amount of trash that was among the leaves. Who just tosses bags and bottles out on the ground? Cigarette butts have been a problem for years along with the broken beer bottles from the 100 or so bars we have in downtown Elyria, but to see the larger items collected on the sidewalk is disgusting. I am sorry to those who did not like the word pig to describe those to discard their trash on the sidewalks downtown, but honestly I cannot think of another word to describe them. Imagine if someone came to your front yard, ate their lunch from Burger King then just tossed the bags, wrappers and cups in your yard and bushes.

Keep up the good work TMC news. Maybe Mr. Smith should look through his local paper and see a column called editorials. You are welcome by this reader to put your opinions in any day of the week.

This is a ridiculous complaint to make and makes no sense whatsoever. I can't understand anyone's objection to the word pigs being used to describe anything, unless A)Their last name happens to be Pigs; B)They're afraid you may be insulting our friends of the swine persuasion.

Other than an insult to the actual animal, I don't see why you SHOULDN'T call a litter-er a P-I-G!

I can see Mr. Smith's point to an extent, but, this habit of littering is completely ot of control, it is a symptom of a much more ingrained lack of respect. Though having grown up a farm, I guess it could be construed as derogatory to pigs, they actually don't litter. Most words I can think of can't be printed, good job, TMC.
