EXPLOSION ROCKS NEIGHBORHOOD
The usually quiet neighborhood of Northfield Drive off North Abbe was shaken by an explosion that could be heard as far away as North Pasadena Friday night around 8pm. One neighbor told TMC NEWS that she heard a noise that sounded like a bomb around 8pm. “I came out of the house and I saw kids running and smoke coming from his garage. I didn’t know what it was, it was just a very loud boom and I started thinking it could be kids making a pipe bomb or I even started thinking we had a meth lab in our neighborhood. You just never know anymore.” Debbie Johnson
Richard Rhodes was lighting a commercial grade firework near his home when it went off a little faster then he thought it would. Rhodes received injuries to his arm and burns to his face and body. He was taken to Elyria Memorial by LifeCare Ambulance for the injuries he received from the explosion. He was then flown to Cleveland Metro for further care. The explosion brought emergency crews from the Elyria Fire Department, LifeCare Ambulance, Elyria Police Department, Lorain County Bomb Squad and the Lorain County Emergency Management Agency.
“It’s just scary to come out of your house and see all the emergency lights and then to see the bomb squad parked on your street, I mean we have a lot of little kids around here. It’s just scary.”
Elyria Police are investigating.
