SMOKE DETECTORS SAVE AVON COUPLE

Avon – An Avon couple told Firefighters that smoke alarms in their Buckingham Street home alerted them to a fire had started in their living room.

Chief Frank Root of the Avon Fire Department said that the fire started as a result of careless smoking. “The homeowner admitted that he had been smoking on the couch before he went to bed and all indications point to the couch as the start of the fire. The fire was pretty much contained to the living room area but the rest of the home received extensive heat and smoke damage.”

The homeowner told Root that the smoke alarms woke them up just before 4 a.m. Monday morning; the couple saw the heavy smoke in the home and quickly got out. “This is why Firefighters are constantly telling people to have proper working smoke detectors in their homes. Had this couple not had the working detectors we would almost certainly have a tragedy on our hands here. There is no doubt that the smoke alarm saved their lives tonight.”

Although Firefighters were able to locate one of the families cats and return him safely to them, two other cats died in the fire.

Sheffield Village and North Ridgeville Fire Departments provided automatic mutual aid to Avon during the fire.

Paramedics with the Fire Department checked on the couple at the scene but both refused any treatment or transport to the hospital.
