“PAUL HARVEY, GOOD DAY!”
RADIO LEGEND DEAD AT 90
Legendary radioman Paul Harvey died Saturday at the age of 90 according to ABC Radio Network Spokesman Louis Adams.Adams said that Harvey, who always ended his news and commentary segments with his signature sign-off, “Paul Harvey…….Good Day!” – died in his winter home in Phoenix, with his family at his side. No cause of death has been released.
Harvey began his radio career in 1951 in a Chicago studio. Harvey’s 15-minute broadcasts were heard by over 18 million people daily on 1,100 radio stations and 400 Armed Forces Radio Network stations.
Based in Chicago, Harvey commuted to work each day in a limosuine to his 16th floor studio located on Paul Harvey Drive.
Harvey, at the age of 81, signed a 10-year, $100 million contract in 200 with his sole employer ABC Radio Networks. Stations who lost in the bidding for Harvey told him that they would be back in 2010 for another go at him.
Harvey was also well known for his advertising pitches and widely considered the best radio salesman of all time. Sponsors, only 1 in 15 were accepted, were required to sign on for at least one year.
When asked about why he kept working, Harvey said; "When the car's running, you don't look inside the carburetor. Just keep rolling."
And now you know, the rest of the story.
