HOLIDAY FATAL CRASHES DOWN 42%
Columbus – The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported today that Labor Day fatalities were down 42 percent from last year. Law enforcement agencies reported 13 fatal crashes, killing 14 people, from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday. Last year, 24 people were killed during a similar reporting period.
As part of the national Over the Limit. Under Arrest. campaign, which ran from August 15 through September 1, the Patrol arrested 1,691 motorists for OVI. During this holiday weekend alone, troopers removed 548 impaired drivers off Ohio roadways.
The following are statistics for the 2008 Labor Day Holiday reporting period:
A total of 13 fatal crashes – Of the 13, four were on State & Federal Highways with four fatalities and nine injured. Three of the crashes were on County / Township Roads with three fatalities. Four were on City Streets with 4 fatalities and one injury. One on Interstate Highway (inside city) with one fatality and one injury. One on Interstate Highway (outside city) with two fatalities.
There were no fatalities on the Ohio Turnpike.
Four of the people killed over the weekend were using their seatbelts while three were not. Seven people killed were on motorcycles, of the seven six were wearing their helmets, one was not.
A daily tally of impaired driver arrests, as well as alcohol-involved crashes was made available to the public at www.statepatrol.ohio.gov this Labor Day. The Patrol’s efforts were conducted in conjunction with a national effort to reduce impaired driving incidents and crashes. Increased and specialized enforcement is made possible through federal overtime funding and works in conjunction with Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort).
