SUNDAYS WITH JASON

What’s up Lorain County? You had me bored to tears this week. Everyone in Elyria is fighting over fireman, police, mayors, taxes and whatnot. In a somewhat juvenile fashion I might add. Too little, too late folks. Changes are made, griping ensues and it’s all about woulda, shoulda, coulda. So dust yourselves off Elyria, put up your chin and slap on a smile; after all, we have a new school on the way; all we need now are some new students to take care of it (yeah, I said it).

So, another feather in my hat when it comes to gun control; we had a good old-fashioned stabbing in Elyria on Gates. It was actually: baseball bat vs. knife-wielding maniac. Like the Wild West, I wish I could’ve been there. No casualties, which is kind of boring but, did you see the pics? Judging by the size of these guys it was a short, wheezing, near cardiac arrest scuffle. The best part? The attacker pedaled off on his bike. My guess is he probably just learned to ride it (cuz that fool ain’t in “Lance Armstrong” kinda shape, ya heard?) If you’re trying to kill someone, here’s a tidbit of info… it’s a getaway car (not vehicle). Murder by bike? What’s next, drive-by’s on roller blades? If you’re too poor to commit a crime, stay home and eat your canned beans. Ultimately, I’m in favor of ridding murderers (and attempted murderers) from not just the streets but THE WORLD!! No need to pack them into jails, on my dime.

Moving on. Sad to see Piccolo Uno torn down, I know many Gold Card Members (terry) enjoyed the tainted meats and rancid cheeses. I personally miss the rat-meat pizza. Nothing says “aww yeahhh” like a 4 a.m. cholesterol attack. Fahgettaboutit.

Okay, that was all I had planned. But a glimmer of hope crept in and here is my HIGHLIGHT OF THE LOWLIGHTS: Idaho Senator Larry Craig who resigned Saturday day after news of his June arrest at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport surfaced this week. Oh Larry, what to say. We know you’re not gay, you just like to sleep with men (allegedly). It’s no big deal; the gay community wouldn’t claim you anyway. Is it that hard to find a good gal out there that you resort to playing footsie with a stranger in the stall next to you while you’re supposed to be “dropping the kids off at the pool.” Is the life of a senator so stressful, that you’ve taken up “gay sign language: restroom edition”? Have you learned nothing from former President Clinton; keep sex at work, where it belongs, let the tax-payer pay for it. Oh Larry. Gentlemen, let this be a reminder that the restroom is no place for footsie; and if you’re that desperate to see a man with his pants off, get a computer (or enlist as an altar boy). FYI: “Peeping” is a crime. Some of you should take that as a “note to self.” (You know who you are) Thank you Larry, for keeping this world something to look at, and laugh.

Oh and to those Gold Card Members, I just remembered my Birthday is Tuesday, which means Terry’s is Wednesday. (Hold your applause) Since I’m not 30, that means Terry is almost….65, 66? I couldn’t find his license when I lifted his wallet. But Happy Birthday Terry, thanks for being a beacon of information in this town since Elyria High School football great Vic Janowicz won the Heisman Trophy in 1950.

In closing, here’s my new idea this week. An Opinion Poll; here’s a question for you Elyria readers:
What do you personally think it would take to see Elyria return to its former glory? (If there was such a thing).

You know how I feel; Burn it down and start over. Ship out the ugly people. Fire the downtown developers. Move the bars to Lorain or Ridgeville or Grafton, or anywhere. Decide what the heck Midway Mall will be called, for good. Put the homeless on a bus to Wellington. (I could go on and on.) But that’s just me. I know that everyone disagrees with the Mayor at some time (then run yourself) and no one agrees with the way his or her taxes are spent (i.e.: schools vs. safety vs. recreation etc.) but are there real and attainable fixes to our problems? Will jobs save our city? I’ve seen your firepower, especially when it has to do with beating kids or messing with the EFD. So, let’s hear what the REAL problem is. I am waiting for your responses (unless your name rhymes with, “meat” from “Avon”).

I hope you all have a great Labor day, remember to take a break and relax (on LABOR Day?). Don’t shoot or stab anyone, LifeCare needs breaks too. Just RELAX.

Jason

In order for Elyria to return to it's "glory," you need a couple of things. A mayor with balls, replace the school board, and creative financing. I know throwing money at the problem does not always work, but in this case, it would help.

What do you personally think it would take to see Elyria return to its former glory? The Answer is simple. We need to get large employee based business back. We many. We lost Nordson, York, Invacare, and others. When we have those businesses, then we have money to pay for more Police and Fire. But since 1999 Elyria has been going down the tubes because of the loss of tax revenue.

A sevice related business structure. The manufacturing jobs of yesteryear are long gone. The rust belt is now the dust belt. Spur economic growth in the professional services industries. No matter how hard the federal government tries, you can't ship good service overseas. (Sarcasm off) Service is where it's at. With the housing market in the crapper and interest rates about to go down again, it's prime time for borrowing that startup capital for new business. I hope someone comes up with a killer idea and decides to plant that idea ANYWHERE in Lorain County. You might ask why I don't try out a business myself? I don't have any good ideas, just a bunch of bad opinions. Elyria would be a good choice, but anywhere is fine. People have cars, and will drive them to work.

Elyria is a flea on the problems of our nation. We need to restore Constitutional law by getting rid of the Unconstitutional IRS, the Unconstitutional Patriot Act, end the Unconstitutional war, get rid of the Unconstitutional Federal Reserve. The main reason we have the debt and ridiculous cost of living is the Federal Reserve printing money that has no value. the more they print the less it's worth. They have a stronghold over every American. They have caused all the foreclosures. We get poor while they get filthy rich. We struggle while they live high off the cream. If we restored our Republic and went back to the government printing our money and stopped letting the greedy evil Bankers (Federal Reserve) enslave us in debt we could restore freedom and live with liberty again. Our president said the Constitution is a "God damned piece of paper". That piece of paper protects us when it's enforced. We need to enforce it! Get the country right and Elyria will be right.

What we need as every city in this country needs is the government support. Stop letting the companies goes across the pond! Has anyone that is old enough on here remembers the factories on Taylor St.? The Phaudler company?Pfaudler is a world leader in providing glass lined reactors along with other corrosion resistant equipment and modular process systems. GONE.. Abex Foundry, GONE. Harshaw Chemical downtown, GONE, Thomassons Potatoe Chips, GONE..This town used to build cars and bicylces, Ridgid Tool Co. is probably just hanging on. The Elyria foundry is up and running at almost full capacity, The Mall will become an indoor skateboard arena, after Dillards, JC Penny and Macys close their doors soon! Oh sure we have the great smells of E-town, I really haven't been able to pin point where exactly the smell from Nylonge, and the peroxide manufacturing plant on Garden St. merge, but I'm sure the people on the west side have gotten used to it. Oh did I forget to mention General Industries? You could smell plastic for miles. What is this envision plan all about? Painting the outside of Vacant buildings so we dont look like the eye sore that we really are?... Let your voice be heard at the next city council meeting, Sept 4 2007 at 7pm. I'm sure they will have a minute after the FD issue is brought up again.

Don't be a hater Jason, but it's still a waste of space. But I can see how people would think this section is cute, it's good filler for those slow Sundays....really slow Sundays

Jason,
I partly agree with the burn it down and start over again. If we did that though, who would fight the fire? Remember, the Mayor said the fire department can do it with 14 guys; let’s not see if he is right.

I do think IF the city ever makes a come back it will only be after some very radical changes. Might I suggest that the city first get rid of that nasty apple festival? Or at the very least make it a one day event and get it over with.

Ask yourself, what does Elyria have to offer people? Great schools? Great parks? Great Nightlife? Great dining? The answers, as hard as it maybe to take, are no, no, no and no. The schools might be good but certainly not great. The parks are places for the lower end to live in, fight in, have sex in and scare good people away. Nightlife in downtown Elyria is horrible. People need to take Jasons advice from last week I think it was when he suggested they go downtown late at night. See if you feel safe, let alone if there is anything down there for you to enjoy.

Elyria, right now, is what it is. Politicians and Main Street folks need to stop trying to make it something it is not. Speaking of main street, give up the farmers market, hasn’t worked and will not work so take down your vinal banner, something other downtown business owners get yelled at if they have one up, and put your efforts into something that might work.

The bickering between the Mayor and the fire department is ridiculous. Hey Mayor, you are not a firefighter, let them do their job, give them the money they need. If you think they are too free spending then you need to bring charges against your fire chief, until then pay up. Also, the new 4 cops is a good start, add about another 8.

I lived in Elyria from 1969-1994. Class of 87, EHS. And now i live in Michigan. The WEST side of Michigan-no Detroit here folks!. Here are a few ideas. All the hillbillies that moved up in the 20's-50's for all that industry and GM are now just breeding white trash. Its sad. Downtown will never be what is was but what about focusing on getting more healthcare jobs in Elyria? Can some of those factories be replaced with newer facilities for healthcare or service industry positions? The big difference I notice when I come back to Elyria is that it is depressed. No one has any pride in their home, their neighborhood and it just looks like hell. Its sad. I live in a small town that has a new mall but yet the downtown has cute little shops like a bookstore, appliance place and restaurants. People here are neat and clean. The yards are clean even in the older neighborhoods. We only have one bar. The mall in Elyria is not what it was...its so ghetto and desperate! Could it be updated and all those baseball card sellers and trash kiosks be out? The roads are horrible. I dont know all the answers but maybe tax breaks for small business owners. Incentives for people to move into Elyria, tear down Wilkes Villa. Partnership with LCCC for training and a citywide incentive to fix up or clean up your house...its really sad. Even safety looks like crap!
