20,000 MORE TROOPS TO IRAQ

White House photo by Eric Draper
President George W. Bush announced tonight in an address to the nation that he will be sending another 20,000+ troops into Iraq.

Here are a couple excerpts:
The situation in Iraq is unacceptable to the American people -- and it is unacceptable to me. Our troops in Iraq have fought bravely. They have done everything we have asked them to do. Where mistakes have been made, the responsibility rests with me.This is a strong commitment. But for it to succeed, our commanders say the Iraqis will need our help. So America will change our strategy to help the Iraqis carry out their campaign to put down sectarian violence and bring security to the people of Baghdad. This will require increasing American force levels. So I've committed more than 20,000 additional American troops to Iraq. The vast majority of them -- five brigades -- will be deployed to Baghdad. These troops will work alongside Iraqi units and be embedded in their formations. Our troops will have a well-defined mission: to help Iraqis clear and secure neighborhoods, to help them protect the local population, and to help ensure that the Iraqi forces left behind are capable of providing the security that Baghdad needs.

Many listening tonight will ask why this effort will succeed when previous operations to secure Baghdad did not. Well, here are the differences: In earlier operations, Iraqi and American forces cleared many neighborhoods of terrorists and insurgents, but when our forces moved on to other targets, the killers returned. This time, we'll have the force levels we need to hold the areas that have been cleared. In earlier operations, political and sectarian interference prevented Iraqi and American forces from going into neighborhoods that are home to those fueling the sectarian violence. This time, Iraqi and American forces will have a green light to enter those neighborhoods -- and Prime Minister Maliki has pledged that political or sectarian interference will not be tolerated.

I've made it clear to the Prime Minister and Iraq's other leaders that America's commitment is not open-ended. If the Iraqi government does not follow through on its promises, it will lose the support of the American people -- and it will lose the support of the Iraqi people. Now is the time to act. The Prime Minister understands this. Here is what he told his people just last week: "The Baghdad security plan will not provide a safe haven for any outlaws, regardless of [their] sectarian or political affiliation."

Press Secretary Tony Snow was asked yesterday, “how far does the President go into the issue of public opinion in weighing this out and in making this new way forward?” Snow replied, “As far as public opinion, the President will not shape policy according to public opinion, but he does understand that it's important to bring the public back to this war and restore public confidence and support for the mission.”

TMC NEWS would like to know how you feel, should the United States send addition troops into Iraq and do you feel confident with the Presidents new strategy? Those are our poll questions and as always we welcome your opinion as long as you sign your name to them.

How short the memories and how closed the minds of people who refuse to acknowledge where funds for terrorism came from and that war, however distasteful, is a necessary evil. THEY brought it to us! We took it back to them. Would you rather fight a full-out war here in the U.S?

Exactly why do so many people hate Bush? Because he has a problem with articulation? Because he made a right decision even with incorrect information about WMD's? Not ALL intelligence can be divulged publically. That allows the enemy to know what you've found out. Think about it. It's called military strategy.

Besides, Bush doesn't act alone on these decisions. Congress, including both parties, voted for the war and knew the same things as the admin. Whether they admit it or not.

We're obviously on the right track. Otherwise why would there be so many insurgents interfering with U.S. Troops in Iraq? There's not much resistance in Afghanistan anymore. Why? Could it be because the majority of terrorists are in Iraq trying to stop the searches for weapon and money caches?

And please stop with the war for oil BS. If it is a war for oil,it is to stop a single country or person from controlling all the oil. Stop rerunning the same old rote mantras and try having an original thought. Read something besides Rolling Stone & Maxim.

Well, the majority of you spoke and let Congress change hands. I hope you get what you wanted.

Meanwhile, I'm glad I don't live near any prime targets.

I will admit right at the top, I am not nor have I ever really been a fan of our President. However, I am a fan of being an American and as an American I have one President who calls the shots. I will stand behind my President and this new strategy and pray that it works. It kills me inside knowing that 20,000 more men and women will be sent to Iraq, some may not make it home alive.

For those of you (democrats, republicans and independents) who bitch and moan about this President and the war, and there are many, I wonder where you were when the city of Elyria dedicated the war memorial in Ely Square. I wonder where you were after the parade when there was a ceremony in the cemetery for those who died fighting for your freedom.

Yea, "dude"'s right. The President and National interest doesn't concern us here in Lorain County or Ohio. People don't want to read and discuss here what they've already ignored somewhere else.

What were you thinking encouraging a local debate on National issues? We want to read about unruly juveniles, and icy roads and Playstation 3 lines at Best Buy. You know, that REALLY important stuff.

Let's debate Mother Nature and bad parenting, not that Bush guy and war and security and terrorists and that icky stuff.

i'm not saying the big picture stuff shouldn't/doesn't concern us. but reading about & debating national stuff on a local news site just seems silly. cnn, fox, the ny times will give me more & better information on bush's speech than will reading a transcript of his remarks.

there are plenty of other places to read about & debate bush/war/national security/the price of tea in china.

Some people like having one source for both local and national news.

If you don't want to read certain articles here, SKIP them! Just like changing the channel, tuning the radio to another station, not buying the book.

Try commenting on the story at hand, as most posters know is the format, and leave what is posted up to the site admin, "dude".

You're the type of poster that get's off subject and makes reading these sites undesireable and loses readers for the site.

(P.S. Sorry, Terry, for going off on the tangent, but people who's comments have nothing to do with the actual story are what clutters up great sites like yours.)
