CAR FIRE SHUTS DOWN SECTION OF ROUTE 58

Amherst – A car fire Saturday afternoon shut down both lanes of travel on Route 58 just south of Park Ave for about an hour.

The car was traveling northbound when the fire started. All occupants were able to exit the car without being injured.

Amherst Police Officers quickly shut down traffic until the fire could be extinguished.

There was a delay because Amherst Firefighters had their hands full with a single car crash with entrapment on the Ohio Turnpike at the time of the fire. Mutual Aid Firefighters were called to battle the fully involved car fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

There were no injuries reported.

WEST RIVER RD MAN SHOT BY POLICE AFTER POINTING GUN AT THEM

Elyria – An Elyria man was shot by Police Officers after he pointed a gun at them.

Police were called to 619 West River Road North after Lorain County 9-1-1 received a call from a man saying he had just shot his wife and that he was going to shoot himself.

Police surrounded the home, just north of Lake Ave, and began speaking with the man. He continued to walk around and would step out onto the back porch but refused numerous orders to drop his gun.

While speaking with the man he turned the gun towards two Police Officers that were in the back yard – it was then that they fired at the man.

LifeCare Paramedics and Elyria Firefighters, who had been staged across the street, were called over by Officers to treat the man. They treated him on scene and then transported him to Elyria Memorial Hospital Emergency Room. He was then flown to a Cleveland hospital where he later died.
